       Nah, it (almost) never ends up doing anything good. Either it goes to pay more guys to wear Santa costumes and ring more bells, or if it DOES go to Africa, it ends up in the pocket of some warlord.The best way to use money to actually improve the world is to lend or invest it with people who are already going to succeed but a little push will help them succeed sooner.
