Grrr. Is there an easy, free, safe way around this? Or do I have to jump through Microsoft's hoops? Pretty sure I don't have this Windows Hello thing.I just wanna be able to look at and access the photos and videos I've backed up off my iPhone, like I used to be able to before I got this new computer. :P

@MountainJay Just download VLC for video, free and open source. It plays all types of audio/video versions.

@MountainJay Malwaresoft is getting worse and worse each day. Why not get a new hard drive to give Linux a try? Easy start to Linux would be Linux Mint. It's almost like windows. I would start with the cinnamon edition.

@cjntenn @rjdiasio @obihahn Excellent, thanks. I wasn't sure which alternatives were safe to use. Malware is scary.

@Salaru -- I have seriously considered it. Unfortunately, I'm deeply in bed with Adobe (10+ years of professional client files) and it doesn't run on Linux. (Unless maybe that's changes?!?)I suppose maybe it would be worth running both OS's. But I'm such a lame GUI/design-focused user and anything very technical is daunting. 😬

@MountainJay @rjdiasio @obihahn I know. Just about anything can be risky anymore.

@cjntenn @rjdiasio @obihahn I installed VLC and it's working well to see the videos I couldn't open before. But I still can't open the HEIC image files. 🤔

@MountainJay If you just want an extension for Microsoft Photos - see thishttps://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/3267731/how-to-open-heic-fileTwo extensions will make the photos app work with those files.PS: HEIC files basically have a short video and still photo. Apple made that the default a while ago.

@mhjohnson @MountainJay what I do is, call the person who sent me the file and tell them to change their settings to 'most compatible' and send me the file again.

@magicalthinking Umm. "the person" is LMJ, not someone else. She said it was a backup of her iPhone to Windows. Okay, I suggested the Microsoft hoops but they don't look onerous to me.@MountainJay

@mhjohnson -- yeah, it's looking like maybe I need to jump through these hoops, especially since I need to be able to open client's images in Photoshop. In the meantime though, I'm curious what settings you're talking about, @magicalthinking . Is the "Authomatic" or "Keep Original" options under "Transfer to MAC or PC" in the Photos settings?

@mhjohnson -- well, I gave in. Jumped through the hoops, paid my $1, installed two extensions and some additional video player that was needed, and now I can see the thumbnails and open the files. 🤷 @magicalthinking

@MountainJay Well linux mint is made to be very similar to windows. Could try this link? Can also use the steam app as an emulator to install and run windows programs I heard. https://thelinuxcode.com/update_linux_mint_system/

@MountainJay Windows 11 no longer has the HEVC codec installed for free/default for some reason. There are a few other ways of getting it, but the store is likely the easiest method. I was going to recommend Irfram view as it can open those as well and it is free.

@MountainJay @cjntenn @rjdiasio you need to change the setting on your phone to save images as jpg instead of heic files. You can just change the extension on any existing files to jpg.

@MountainJay And nobody mentioned VLC is open source and has been around a long time. Too bad your not a nerd geek. VLC will run from the command line.
