Are medlars and quince worth growing? I was thinking about planting one of each this spring. I don’t eat jelly or preserves.

I would say no then, medlar tastes really nice but you need to blet it and its a faff to eat with seeds etc unless you make it into something. Quince is less faff to eat but is less tasty. If you want something really tasty that delicious straight from the plant its a Chilean guava. However I am guessing you might not be able to grow them, even here they unfortunately died from freak dry cold event with no snow after surviving far colder.

You can make a lovely crumble with them. They make a good fruit leather, if that’s not too similar to jam. They are messy trees though, quite sprawling and floppy, not like a nice little apple or cherry. Shout out for pheasant berry, too. Shrub rather than tree, but they are delicious.

I hadn't even thought to search for pheasant berry being edible! Grows everywhere here and I naively assumed it was only for the birds!

Slightly burnt caramel flavour. They’re a bugger to pick, but otoh you get to eat the ones that burst while you’re doing it.

We call those Himalayan honeysuckle. I grew those at my last place. Tasty, but I found it to be a berry that you snack on just while in the garden.

Looking forward to trying them, I have been encouraging them everywhere only due to the flowers. Never seen anything made from them but I assume that is because they explode before you can even eat them! 🙂 Thanks for letting me know.
