This entire thread speaks loudly to me. I doubt anyone will read through it but its important. phnt makes a really well thought-out post backed with references and some has-been gnu-social dis-infuluencer just disregards it, but I digress, that isn't the point.If there's ever a major schism in the fediverse, normies versus shitposters, hugbox versus shit-talk, mainstream versus "dark" fedi, I'm going to fall on the dark side. No matter how much of a peace-loving, respectful, freedom loving, universally-accepting person I am, I'm never going to meet the purity tests of police-state ass, centralized-block-list ass, please-protect-me-from-slurs ass brainrot that exists on the internet. This is partially because I think everyone could stand to toughen up a little but primarily because These Fucking People™ want freedom without any responsibility. @prettygood Since the very beginning, I thought that fediblock or something similar by it was literally wrong. Each dramas that has it, Whoever starts it always ended up so wrong that it makes everyone questioning about the fediverse itself.Let's just be honest here, Everyone feared being listed on fediblock is already a sign of something, and it's been so wrong that i don't even encourage following fediblock or similar thing.

@prettygood the fact that majority of public instances that we see on the surface literally block anything about "dark fedi" is already so wrong on some part of it especially when they're hosting for more than 2-5 persons.and i am proud enough to not block the "dark fedi". they might post boobs or similar but deep down when it comes to healthy conversations, they did really well so far when i observe it.

@shibao @prettygood i remember mastodon.art block my old instance at fedi.lecturify.net alongside it's other small amount of refugees.it never felt so good to be able to say "fuck" and "dipshit" after so long. yeah.the relaxing part about it is that some empty-headed ended up closing their door on us, which ironically makes the network feels even more healthier than ever.

@nicholas @prettygood I always wished there were a way for admins to manage server block lists on a user account level, to curate a default experience during onboarding, but then let each user review and selectively opt out of them in their settings somewhere. That would have been a realistic compromise. Fediblock just made the protocol feel completely broken. I think most of the block-happy types have migrated to Bluesky though, and this is best for everyone

@prettygood pone.social has already gone on block lists simply because pone.social doesn't have a public blocklist or list of rules longer than "no spam"a while back I came across a github text file for fediverse instances to use as a blocklist, pone.social ended up on that list.I'm not sure how many people use that blocklist, but I've seen it pop up a few times, so maybe quite a few.

@monkyyy @shibao I don't deliberately exclude anyone except chomos. I have mutuals on mastosoc, tsundere, gnusocial dot jp, woem, everywhere. I love interesting people, no matter what their MO is. I don't waste hours of my life every day here because it reinforces my personal politics or because I'm in need of goon fuel, I'm here to talk to *people*, human connection. I said during my TFF interview that fedi is the most human place I've ever encountered in 30 years online. Such a diverse, unique gaggle of genuine ass real people, and I couldn't ask for more.

@prettygood "dark fedi" at least feels more real, enjoyable, and direct than "mastodon/mainstream fedi" having to toe their lines or get banished when some admin somewhere gets one whiff. @lazyisolation I do deliberately try *not* to offend people or piss people off, because the diverse human connection on the fediverse is wonderful and it sustains me through a lot of things. I just got really fired up watching someone I know and respect present a well thought-out post and get "erm you get blocked a lot I wonder why" as the sole response. Its dismissive, embarrassing, and downright childish.

@prettygood Yeah there's people even in "mainstream/mastodon" instances that are alright and would be fine chatting with, just a shame the whole "dark fedi" stigma or even just simply using Pleroma gets us all lumped into one, gets dismissed without much thought, and reduce the chance of even being able to communicate with them to begin with. Having two accounts maybe the compromise but that's also two-facing personalities to act and toeing the line in one account, so I just go about it as it is. That guy reply even quite on par with the dismissive attitude of the mass-blockers Ive seen not really listening to our side
