I'm seeing a discussion on AI and souls or whatever (I am too mentally tired to skim) and I think I'll accept artificial intelligence when it can learn like an organism. I'd love to have rock friends that have been tricked to think via physics. That's so cool. But you have to earn it, you can't be one of them handfed clankers.

@f0x I think what we have now counts as "almost". it's like a very retarded almost, when you know what they're really doing. I wonder what it would feel like to be a creature that thinks like that, kind of extremely jittery and jarring compared to our more continuous thinking.

@bajax AI's in their current iteration do not learn like people at all iirc. We're still at the "replicating millions of years of evolution to create a neural network" stage. someone better at this will surely correct me.

@f0x I think the border is at embodiment before I'd accept them as real. They have to know what it feels like to hold something in their hands, to have relations to other objects, with their own properties and agency, for me to think they have a chance of being as conscious as us. I don't know why it seems like the dimensionality and sense of embodied individuality is important.

@heavens_feel the impactful evolutionary shaping humanity will have if androids become a thing will be.. somewhat terrifying. It allows for a purely shallow mating selection and even if synthetic wombs become a widespread thing (which I predict will not work for psychological and immune system reasons) it'll render an entire sex useless, which will evolutionarily make more feminine/androgynous men. I forget the name of this phenomenon.overall droid partners are unnatural, messing with God and the nature he created, and childish.

@f0x I hope for everyone remotely involved in these topics to understand that no AI can be an actual entity. It's just software. There is no metaphysical vessel to hold a consciousness or soul. AI is whatever humans program it to be. It may be convincing, effective, and even useful in this, but it will never *be*.

@f0x I understand it's a fine line between advanced long-context reasoning AI and between actual consciousness, but it's a fine line that hides an abyss. AI cannot be given consciousness. There is no *presence* to be conscious of anything.

@irie I'm expecting to be proven wrong on this, though. All evolution was started by vibration that made "rocks" work together (at a molecular level), but for millions of years afterwards there's been a clear lime between rock and organism.. rock is the starter of life

@f0x @heavens_feel I heard this same fear 10 years ago when people would bring robots on talk shows (people were too retarded to look into the fact that the robots were being held up by like a team wirelessly). all it is is an advanced if then statement that runs millions of times per second and in the offchance it gains a semblance of what seems like human life it will be inevitably be lobotomized by low iq niggers and get rich quick wiggers prompting it with some of the dumbest shit imaginable by the minute.

@f0x there's no reason to believe anything alive ever came from rocks. Your observation that after an assumed 'leap' from inanimate to animated matter rocks remained lifeless, should instead signal that such a leap never happened. Based on this, there is a 0% chance AI (*artificial* intelligence because there is no intelligence) will ever be more than probabilistic software.

@f0x@dsmc.space the kind you are looking for is the autocorrect on your keyboardThe gpt types that are widespread are never going to be capable of that due to physical constraints Back before the boom when I was still working in the industry I made an on device one that actually “learned” and still have it around in my archives but it was impossible to deploy the same way modern ai is deployed since the model needs to be personalised to the individual instead of just fed a list of contextIt was also barely capable of stringing together coherent English sentences since it was meant for languages that use multiple bytes per character so the tokeniser had a stroke when encountering most English text lol
