I think dive shops have a tendency to underplay or undersell the difficulty of certain dives. Went to a site a few days ago with a buddy who does not have a ton of experience. The dive was not for beginners. There were areas with no overhead surface visibility - tunnels - but the shop we went with said there weren't. That's an advanced dive in my book. Now I know...it was my first time there. My friend did not have a good time & aborted early. #scuba

@brianvastag Ahh lanai. Been there many of times. The issues there can range from surge to unpredictable currents. I’ve dove there at night it’s really cool. Though there was one time it was night and went to monolith site to the west of cathedrals and sudden currents out of nowhere all the divers went everywhere. It can be unforgiving at any of those dive sites just depends how the water moves and wind or they can be super calm. I mean it’s a super easy dive, but if the conditions are wrong it can be nasty. https://youtu.be/6A4FYQHOsLE?si=PDgly3dimC6x2M2FI lived on Maui for a number of years. That photo of me is off Molokai in my profile.

@SlicerDicer Is that Cathedral 1? We did Cathedral 2 & then White Rock. Not sure why we didn't do Cathedral 1. It was a little surgey, not too bad. The main issue is my friend asked the dive shop if there were areas with no overhead visibility. They said no, which is...not correct.

@brianvastag Yeh that was shot by me at 1. White rock is cool but I actually like barge harbor more. Long fin Anthias are amazing. Though that’s 120+

@dadbod We did research it...it's a site with lava tubes, but even watching videos and such it's hard to know exactly what the site was like in regards to overhead situations. We still relied on the dive shop to be honest about it and they weren't.

@brianvastag @dadbod Feel free to ping me for any site on Maui I can gladly help I’ve been to them all. Actually my wife and I are planning on moving there in the next few years. I miss the water there so much. Highly recommend going to Makena landing it’s outstanding and super easy for anyone new. That’s what I’d recommend for that situation.
