@MLE_online There was a 32 inch iMac there. I just have no place for a 32 inch screen LOL.

@ai6yr in the front yard. It's not clutter, it's an artistic statement about how the earth is humanity's yard, and the waste we dump is filling it up

@Stormgren @MLE_online I should have taken a picture of the four OVERFLOWING bin. Three large screen TVs, probably still working. Two PCs (CD-roms, so I suspect Windows XP). A vacuum cleaner (which really shouldn't be in there lol). An entire bushel of HP printer cartridges. The giant screened mac (which can easily be loaded with Linux). At least 4 printers... power cords by the bushel as well. I only snagged the spare Ethernet cables and power strips off the top to replace a few of the power strips that drowned in my house, and I don't turn down commercial Ethernet jumper cables because I break the ends off them enough and always have something I need to temporarily attach. (I can build my own, but... time and all that, and molded cables are slightly better than my handiwork, lol).

@MLE_online @tomjennings CB is only useful on cross country drives, in bad weather (channel 19). The rest of the time, it's right wing racists and people trying to say the F word as much as possible in a minute. Realistically only propagates about half a mile down the road. (AM)

@tomjennings @ai6yr I took my CB radio down to Whittier Narrows on a bike ride and down there I could hear two hillbilly-ass guys talking to each other and complaining about Mexicans. That's all I've ever heard on these radios

@tomjennings @MLE_online @ai6yr Channel 6 (AM) and ch 38 (SSB) are often active whenever I check. Pretty sure none of those folks are running more than 4 W (12 W PEP on SSB).

@VE2UWYI lack an antenna, so its all moot. And i live in a shallow valley, though half a mile from an interstate. "Some day" i will get back into radio. Snd also to put up meshcore @MLE_online @ai6yr

@tomjennings @MLE_online @ai6yr CB was fun in the 1970s. I'd have become a ham then but this high-schooler was having no part of Morse code. When the FCC dropped code in 1991 I got licensed as fast as I could … then passed 5-wpm the next year & 13-wpm the year after that. They dropped all but 5-wpm in 2000 so got Extra. Lots of stuff in between, mostly scanners. You know about the Mesh stuff, so you've kept up some. Much more interesting hobby today than in 1991.

@VE2UWY Yeah, I got Amateur Extra in the 5wpm days. I was mainly interested in CW in the HF bands, because the physics are so weird. Lol, mobile CW in my propane powered '63 Rambler. No, no keying while driving. But I got sick of old cranks yammering all day long about their goddamn antennas.License still valid, but I have no gear at all any more. I had an Icom 706?@MLE_online @ai6yr

@tomjennings @MLE_online @ai6yr Cranks are, sadly, not evenly distributed and amateur radio seems to be a local maxima ...*sigh*

@VE2UWYFor my entire life amateur radio has also newn fairly explicitly racist, even the arrls patriotic boilerplate in the handbooks has that "old fashioned" American tone that we all know what it means. Haven't looked at one in the 2000s, but i grew up on the 60s on up. Theres a couple books written about it too, about the gatewaying etc. @MLE_online @ai6yr

@tomjennings @MLE_online @ai6yr Don't get me started on the ARRL! I became a Life Member in '07 & had I not done so then & waited 'til, say, 2014 … I never would have plunked down the cash & probably would have let it go entirely. QST got so bad that I dropped the paper version (not worth the shelf space) long before the Board summarily deleted paper from existing members' list of benefits. The only good thing the board has done in the last decade or so was to make all the e-journals free.
