Reminder of the difference between mute and block:Problem: Somebody is posting things you don't want to see.Mute = Solves the problem.Block = Solves the problem spitefully. If the only thing you need is to filter your timeline, then Mute is the correct solution. If your goal is to raise the overall level of hostility and resentment on the fedi, then block away.I, for one, think there's already plenty of hostility and resentment to go around.

@ryan I think it's hilarious that @CSB blocked me for the act of unfollowing him. Am I supposed to be upset by this?

@progo Well, it does mean you’ll miss out on such stunning and insightful posts as:Spoilers and endless screenshots of the current woke Hollywood sci-fi showShort bios of people whose lifetime’s accomplishments are insignificant compared to having been born with Polish ancestry.AI slop nipplesI don’t know why you would want to give all of that up.

@ryan Mute allows them to still see your posts. The way of evangelism without the suffering.Block branches you out of their universe. Both have merits.

@miyagiyoda This would be a solid argument if block worked the way it's advertised. But it only works if all of your posts are already restricted.Assuming your posts are public, it's trivial to evade a block by logging out or switching to an alt, and everyone knows this. At that point, all you've done is to mute, but passive-aggressively.

@miyagiyoda @ryan For me blocking isn't necessarily spiteful at all, but it's very rarely used, and permanent, whereas muting is often temporary. There are several people I basically like but mute for weeks or months at a time and I like to be able to come back from that without their knowing or taking offense. I will only block an account that is fundamentally of zero value to me, consistently bad faith, or other very specific scenarios. If I simply mute them I will eventually forget who they are and waste time unmuting them and paying for it later

@ryan but if someone is muted and boosted by someone you follow, their post will show up in your timeline, right? I sometimes have to block the haters if they keep getting boosted by people I follow.

@PeaceandProsperity That sounds like a bug in the software. There shouldn't be any difference between mute and block in that situation.
