There's this notion of "deskilling" when people use AI to do their work for them. It's honestly something I've always been worried about, even before the current AI trend.I've always had this deep fear of being too reliant on some specific app or tool, and instead always try to develop the fundamental skills to get the results I want from any tool.

It's why I approached JS frameworks like Angular and React with caution from the beginning. It's why I don't use a CSS libraries like Bootstrap or Tailwind.I don't want to be an expert at some product. I want to be an expert in the fundamental technologies that underpin such products.I only want to use products if I can swap them out for another one without breaking everything, because deep down I don't trust any of them.

@Tijn React is also just terrible. React websites are bloated, use gigabytes of RAM to display a single paragraph, the generated source code is incomprehensible… it's a mess

Like, I don't mind using a DAW to make music. That's a product. But I don't want to be an expert at one specific DAW and only have the ability to use that and nothing else.Right now I'm using Reaper as my DAW. It's fine. But I've used others before and I imagine I'll use something else again in the future. If Reaper ever develops in a direction I don't like, I'll toss it out and replace it with something I do like.Because I'm not a Reaper user. I'm a musician.

I feel this applies to all fields where people use software to make stuff.Like, if you're a writer, you want to focus on the fundamentals of writing. What you don't want is to be married to Microsoft Word though. That's just a tool you use.Doesn't mean you can't learn how to use it well, but ultimately your work is not operating MS Word, it's being good at writing.Etc!

I was reminded of this again when Adobe announced they're taking away Animate. It's so devastating for the people who rely on this tool professionally. It's honestly irresponsible behaviour from Adobe and they shouldn't be trusted for any professional work ever again. But also, I hope most of the people using Adobe Animate know the fundamental skills of animation and can apply those with other tools.I also hope these "other tools" exist though 😬

This is also why it's absolutely terrible when students learn how to do their work with some specific software product. That's like, the polar opposite of what young people should be learning. There's some kind of assumption that if you learn "the big product" you'll be set for life. But reality says otherwise, because everything is always in flux. What is fashionable now, will be obsolete in a decade. The fundamental skills however aren't as flaky. They are always important!

This is all pretty rambly hahaI just think it's important people hone their actual fundamental skills. Developing a craft is good. But only learning which button to press in a specific product is not that. Tools are only a means to an end!
