does AI mean young people should typically have more years or fewer years of education?

@interfluidity fewer, the government wants an easily manipulated uneducated populace.

@interfluidity years dont matter. Right now its taking 12 years to get about 4 years worth of education.

@interfluidity what does this question even mean?

@joXn good question! but if (a big if) AI reorganizes how humans engage in the kind of work that demands schooling, might we decide to do less of it, or else devote education to very different purposes, which might have implications (shorter or longer) for how “much” of it we do?

@interfluidity If by “AI” you mean “current or near-future LLMs” then one thing that an answer to this question has to take into account is that the answer will be different for the population of “young people” who learn English as a first language vs. that which doesn’t, since LLMs are overwhelmingly trained on English-language text and are semi-hopeless at languages like Japanese or Hindi (not to mention Icelandic or Cantonese or Nahuatl).

@joXn That’s a very interesting wrinkle. Do you think societies with languages more distant from English will much less quickly reorganize work? (That might be a good thing or a bad thing for them!) Alternatively, despite the United States and broad Anglosphere’s flagging prestige, will the prospect of AI automation of white-collar work incentivize greater adoption of English in professional settings?

@interfluidity I think that there’s a growing body of evidence that the effect of relying on LLMs for one’s intellectual work is generally harmful. In the mild case, that’s limited to loss of previously acquired skills or failure to acquire new ones; but it extends all the way to cognitive decline, delusions, and psychosis. So I think as evidence for this becomes more established, societies with languages more distant from English are going to look at LLMs and think “we dodged a bullet there”.

@joXn Seems a distinct possibility! Imagine if there had been some cultures that dodged facebook/x/tiktok style social media. I think they’d have dodged a bullet!

@interfluidity The good thing is that if you’re an academic in the right discipline, there are probably natural experiments out there for testing this hypothesis. It certainly is the case that patterns of social media engagement are culturally contingent, and non-anglophone cultures’ usage of facebook/x/tiktok diverge from what you see in the USA. Check out the “Why We Post” series from UCL Press for a very large number of ethnographic case studies. https://uclpress.co.uk/book/how-the-world-changed-social-media/

@interfluidity I think it is very adorable that you think those steering this would care about young or any people, at all.

@interfluidity If we really did, we would have beaten them (the rich, not the young) to death a long time ago.

@interfluidity Lol, i think there was some unhinged fanfic that said just about the same thing. It featured eating bodies and drinking blood, i think? As far as i heard, the fandom turned pretty toxic, though, beating each other to death. Nothing about the positive aspects anymore, emissions like donkeys, inflicting violence or getting high and such.

@interfluidity Hey, i'm not part of the fandom anyways, i just heared that there were pretty wild parties before we became complacent and just accepted it all. I would prefer cooperation to taxation, cannibalism or any other perversions. (channeling this particular part of peter sellers from dr. strangelove, you pervert!)
