In Czech, Sunday (today) is ‘neděle’ which is made from:• *ne‑ — a negating prefix• *dělo — meaning “work” or “activity,” from the same root as modern Czech dělat (“to do, to work”)So it’s officially a #slack day, get with the pogram people ! #subgenius

@thomas_klopf Try living with these amish luddites. I can’t even get groceries on one of the two days I have off in the week. Can’t wash my car, mow the lawn and am not supposed to vacuum either. Go to church, go home, shut up. You’d think it’s still 1941. Absolutely backwards. And the arguements I hear back are fkn comedy. It’s like they all have the same “Accepted Responses When Called Out On Modern Fascism”.#1 always is “Blame the church”.

@Unabart yeah that drives me nuts too when we’re in Germany. Czechia is a lot better with store hours, but still not the work-till-you-drop culture in the US

@thomas_klopf @Unabart In Pennsylvania we have some of the oddest laws regarding alcohol. Can't buy it until 10 or 11 AM on Sunday, unless you're in a bar.Beer can only be bought in unrestricted quantity from a beer distributor. It can be bought from a gas station, restaurant, or cafe in restricted quantity, but it cannot be drank there. It cannot be bought in a grocery store, but some grocery stores set up "cafes" in the store whose sole function is to sell alcohol.

@thomas_klopf @Unabart Wine and spirits for drinking elsewhere can only be bought at a government-ran store. You can buy as much as you want. But you can also buy wine from a winery or one of that winery's stores, but it has to be the wine they make; they cannot sell other wines. I think the wine has to actually be made in PA to qualify.

@thomas_klopf @Unabart Wine or spirits can be bought at a restaurant or bar, but it must be drank there. You may also bring your own bottle of wine to a restaurant, but not liquor, only if the restaurant allows, and it must be opened and poured by the waiter or waittress.

@kilroy_was_here @thomas_klopf I had to work in Johnstown, PA for a month back in 2003 and there was a drive through beer place, like a barn. i had to stay in my car and they would load the trunk. And bars couldn’t sell beer until noon or something like that on Sunday’s. Fkn Quakers!

@Unabart @kilroy_was_here my booze war story: in the 90s we had to evacuate New Orleans because of a hurricane, so we went up to stay with a friends brother at Louisiana Tech. Unfortunately the county was dry on Sundays, the day we went up, so we had to drive like 30-40 miles to the county border to a huge, strategically placed liquor store. I still remember driving up to it, huge signs and lighting, a thing of beauty. 72 hours of partying followed.

@thomas_klopf @kilroy_was_here That’s how you survive a hurricane! I worked at a hospital on the Pine Ridge Native American Res and, while it was a dry country, the ER was packed with alcohol related issues. There’s an entrance to the res on each side and immediately on the other side of these exits were liquor stores and bars. Fkn self defating. That is the poorest res in the country. Just squalid living conditions. Awful treatment.
