You know, it's really sad. It's been years now and the vast majority of people still have no clue what made Bitcoin special in the first place. This was supposed to be a social revolution like the Liberty Dollar was. Local businesses were supposed to be accepting Bitcoin directly and not just using trading services to convert it back to dollars on the fly. When you put your money in a bank, you're basically lending it to the bank and they can do whatever the hell they want with it. We have all had the power to be our own banks for years now and most of us are completely ignoring it. At some point, this just affirms my Christian belief that human beings are not basically good. And now here's the evidence. We get something so powerful and we just use it to build another casino.

@mitchconner the people who care about these principles didn't actually decrease in number. they just switched to stuff like monero when the hobby was being invaded by clueless people

"Do not immediately attribute to malice that which can be attributed to stupidity." is what comes to my mind on this topic. It's not that people immediately look to do harmful things, often it is that they have a very difficult time even thinking about how to make change between two currencies for a morally good transaction.

@matthew Yeah well all I see is another herd of sheep going into a mania over another form of pokemon card / sneaker. In every cases people are scalping the commodities instead of properly using them.

So the herd is avoiding long term thinking that could have lasting benefits and instead going for short term gain and shiny objects. Can we blame them too much for that? This is one of the reasons why I no longer hold much hope for crypto-currencies to be generally adopted unless market circumstances absolutely force it (central bank completely collapse, while still having usable internet for crypto-currency transactions). I think things like Bitcoin (as digital cash) and Monero have incredible potential and promise... but people are extremely unlikely to actually use them. #cypherpunk

@matthew The liberty dollar had legs and then the FBI arrested his ass. I guess people learned a lesson.

Crypto-currencies not being backed by anything physical solves the problem of seizure. Bitcoin's design may have taken that into account, due to the timing of the Liberty Dollar raid and seizure being just a few years before. Yeah, so with that threat of force are people dumb to avoid alternatives to the dollar? Maybe the incentives still don't add up well enough for regular people to seek alternatives to the dollar. It is a hard problem. The dollar currency problem is destroying the viability of most "middle class" American families, but switching to an alternative is nearly impossible for most people to consider. #economics #dollar #crypto #cypherpunk #gold #liberty

Yes, I was also thinking about the Goldback. Seems to be the same type of concept, reborn at a later time. #gold #goldback

Gresham's Law: People hoard good money and spend bad moneyAlso, as long as people can borrow dollars, they'll be happy to borrow and spend them, after all, they're devaluing over time... It's just nobody wants to HOLD dollars, nobody (outside of like drug dealers) does have any significant cash balance. Everyone has some kind of asset, if they have anything at all.
