@zanlogemlor ahem in a gold based economy the price of gold can’t go up. A bit is intrinsically a bit because it’s made of gold, not because it’s got subbutt’s stamp on it

@sapphire @zanlogemlor If by "price of gold" you mean "gold to bit exchange rate", this is only true if Equestrian mints have no seignorage or legal tender laws and the bit is treated purely as a convenient unit of gold that can be freely melted/minted. We don't see ponies weighing bits regularly which suggests a legal tender system, although this could also be because it is a very high trust society

@vul @zanlogemlor most medieval societies had little or no legal tender laws, you couldn't put the king's seal of approval on it but you also couldn't brand that on your cow. You COULD trade in non-governmental coin you just assumed the risk that it was what it said it was, whereas a coin minted by the king was guaranteed by his mintseignorage is perfectly acceptable under this system, its just overage presented to the mint in exchange for their work (i.e. here's 10100 ounces of gold please make me 10000 one ounce coins)

@vul @sapphire this is why it was a commission, and why i dont normally draw topical big brain concepts like currency devaluation

@sapphire @zanlogemlor right, but currency debasement still can (did) happen? if the king's "guarantee" is fraudulent his "bit" would buy less gold, and regardless of the acceptability/legitimacy of seignorage, a change in seignorage would still affect whether people want to hold raw gold vs. coin

@vul @zanlogemlor That would be an effect, not a cause then. The price of gold would go up in response to the bits being debased, not the other way around. Celestia may be running low on gold to put to her minters, but that's neither here nor there to this discussion

@sapphire @zanlogemlor sure, if what the ponies are saying is taken as a literally correct in-universe interpretation and not something akin to people saying "well, prices went up because of inflation"

@zanlogemlor @vul @sapphire All I'm getting from this is that I could clip equestrian bits and ponies would be too stupid to notice
