I was an E3 for a while living in the barracks and it was fine.I had 2 barracks rooms and then later was TAD to the barracks to manage them, I had the shit-ass 2-people-share-a-common-room thing when I was an E3, a room with two beds and a shared bathroom.The second room when I got E4 was an individual room like 300sqft but the bathroom was still shared. The bed was bigger though.Still daily or weekly room inspections, but still didn't have to pay for food or lodging, so it was pretty good. I saved a ton of money because I didn't drink alcohol or gambled, and as an E3-E4 with no dependants I was able to save up a lot of money and buy my first truck and my first carIt's decent pay.

I never went into debt and could save money, but living conditions were bad. Mine were particularly bad even by marine corps standards, but I eventually landed with guys I liked living with so it was bearable. We may have different definitions of acceptable, but your definition sounds like slavery to me. Totally unacceptable.

@tyler @RichardKuklinskisIcyGlare Yea if you pay only that much you can only attract people who believe it’s fair. Most of them end up being unskilled their whole lives (I’m excluding you). Infantry has a strong White presence so I was mostly with White guys but a huge portion of the military is poor Mexicans or blacks trying to get out of even shittier living conditions. White guys, who are even halfway competent, deserve way better than that. There’s no real avenue in enlistment for that beyond meritorious promotions or a very long time investment. Considering some of the risks at play for some of the jobs, particularly the ones White guys tend to do, the value proposition is really low.

Guard (and maybe Reserve) is the only component in the Army that you can retire at a rank that low.Dude was a CPA and made bank in his day job. He just liked helping out during disasters. I was a financial advisor with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society for a year or so. I would do budgets and grant interest free loans to applicants, NMCRS is a nonprofit and fantastic. I enjoyed volunteering. But man there are some niggerlicious folks out there. I was 20 sitting down doing budgets for grown ass sailors with no sense. Often when sailors transfered duty stations they accidentally got overpaid from the previous station and then the govt would take a bunch of money out of their check and they'd be in a pickle. That was the most common I think.

I had a guy, E4, whose buddy was the maintenance officer.They'd go drink lunch together. Then the MO would go home and AME4 Martini (not his real name.
