Odessa is a obvious thing that needs to be taken due to access to the Black Sea but most people overlook the land routes the Russians would need to effectively produce and transport goods in the region, Kharkiv is one of those key points.It's gonna be a pain to supply Odessa and Donets'k if they don't take Kharkiv and the surrounding countryside. Taking Odessa is one thing, keeping it is another, and for that they will need relatively local production and land routes in addition to sea routes.

Not taking & keeping Odessa and not linking in Transnistria would be a huge strategic mistake for Russia. I expect NATO knows this and there will be stiff resistance to it. I'm not even a Russaboo, I can just look at a map and engage in some armchair warlording.
