@toiletpaper i tinker with models for that but the TTS models are still too expensive to casually slap in to a social space. some spacemans servers have it, i imagine they have a gpu server doing all the streaming.we've had cheap voices before i think i'd like to see them come back. i'm sure we've learned some things since the 90s to make the GMM synths work

@icedquinn I fired up pocket-tts the other day and it works pretty close to real-time on only a CPU (my GPU isn't supported). So if you don't have a huge amount of traffic that could be an option for self-hosting. Also does voice cloning if you don't like the 6 that ship with it out of the box.

@toiletpaper i think this one actually came across my desk when i was shopping models. i ended up using chatterbox for the amber books.i'm pretty sure we're hugely overpaying for AI. stanfords butterfly nets and unsloth bragging about speed-ups and efficiency are minor evidence that there's a lot more wasted potential going on than people realize.which is why i still have curiosity for fiddling with some of the old parts. especially since a lot of these frontier voice models are basically just resorting to using LLMs as phoneme to sound translation tasks--we have old cheap shit that does discrete token transforms that ran on 486's :cat_sad:

@icedquinn Yeah. I used espeak for giving me voice alerts of sms messages. But it sounds too robotic and the phoneme translation is pretty bad, especially for anything not already in it's dictionary. That's why the pocket-tts piqued my interest. Actually sounds good, and runs about the same speed on my box. Voice cloning is also a nice plus.I think the GPU market is probably gonna tank since most of the big tech companies are switching to ASICs. Totally apart from improvements in the algorithms.

@icedquinn I wish I was more savvy with math tbh. It's not my forte, which is kinda annoying since LLMs are basically giant spreadsheets of statistics (what RMS calls PI / Pretend Intelligence). I've created a couple toy models from tutorials and such, but it's probably well past my day or interest to gain any greater skills in the math dept. I have to just satisfy myself with using the APIs that are available using my existing full-stack know-how.
