In the home office after finishing Podnews. CO2 levels in the office significantly above the 1,000 ppm max that is recommended. I closed the office door at about 6.30pm. It only really started going up at 8.45pm. Eye-openingly, when I woke up this morning, the bedroom was running more than 2,000 ppm! Unusually we kept the windows closed last night (because of the heat). Currently, just 468ppm in the bedroom tonight - and the window is open.Quite an eye-opener.

@francosolerio @james Does your home have a very tight thermal envelope (full house wrap, spray foam insulation, etc)?

@dave @francosolerio Nope - indeed, it has virtually no insulation. Wall cavity is empty; house just made of foil-lined boards and wooden planks. Quite surprising.

@james @francosolerio Wow. Yes I would have thought the house would breathe enough on it's own to moderate that.

@dave @francosolerio Yes, me too. It is useless (useless!) at insulating against the heat (87°F today) and similarly useless at insulating against the “cold” (sometimes it goes down to 44°!) so I’d hoped it was, at least, decent at ventilation.

@james @dave @francosolerio given the local climate, is there not a building culture (or even building regs) in that part of Australia for massive amounts of insulation?

@pauljrobinson @dave @francosolerio You’d think so.The thing I’m amazed about is two new-build homes which were built on this road last year where the builder didn’t bother to put solar on the roof. Astonishing oversight! Apparently that’s fine here too. If I were made King, I’d insist on solar on all new builds as a condition of planning permission.

@james @dave @francosolerio don’t you live in one of the sunniest/hottest spots on the planet?!?!?? Do you have climate deniers in charge of local/state government or something? It’s like that phrase about leaving money on the table, except it’s sunshine on the roof

@pauljrobinson @dave @francosolerio This year, Queensland government will earn AUD $4.7bn (£2.4bn) from royalties for mining coal and gas. The Murdoch press thinks there’s no such thing as climate change. (Nobody but Murdoch owns a newspaper in this state). The richest person in Australia is Gina Rinehart, a mining magnate. I could go on.

@james @pauljrobinson @francosolerio This is how I'm insulating our home (built in 1892) one room at a time. Tearing out the drywall and piecing in 2" R-10 foamboard "glued" in place with spray foam. It's the recommended method for old homes that had no original insulation as it maintains the ability of the walls to dry from both sides. It's a long process, but has made a big difference so far in our comfort.

@james @pauljrobinson @francosolerio We switched to multi-zone mini-split HVAC about 8 years ago which dropped our summer power bill dramatically because of the efficiency, but without insulating, the electric heat can't keep up in the winter. Insulating like this is a great way to address that and it's easy to explain the process to a contractor if you don't want to go the DIY route.Reference: https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/insulating-walls-in-an-old-house-with-no-sheathing

@dave @pauljrobinson @francosolerio Nice. I do mean to do proper insulation next time we have work done. We work upstairs, and there’s not even any insulation in the roof. We have split HVAC in most rooms. Our house is also off the ground (on stilts) which helps keep it somewhat insulated from whatever else is going on out there. Our home was built in…. 2005. I’m sometimes fascinated at the Australian building codes (and lack of them).

@dave @pauljrobinson @francosolerio (our previous home was built in 1860, and was toasty warm - nice very thick brick. But that was in another country.)
