The recent American BigTech circus has led to several countries promoting their version of Digital Sovereignty. Whilst commendable on paper, it has several loopholes that just replaces the face of digital surveillance. Digital sovereignty is not swapping US-controlled software with a surveillance app proudly made in your home country. A statist definition of digital sovereignty is not a progressive move nor should it be construed as liberatatory by all means. Sovereignty must be bestowed to the individual and communities to own their data. Until the ordinary people remains divorced from the ownership of their data, sovereignty remains just another hype.
