Well, turns out fresh turmeric is definitely not for me. It IS bitter. Ergo, I don't like it.

@amerika How would it not be bitter if I put it into a curry? I don't want bitter things in my food.

@Gnomeshatecheese The curry spice family is an incredible balancing act. The bitter turmeric is offset by the sweeter fenugreek and cardomon, balanced by the spicy chili powder and cayenne, buoyed by the black pepper, and smoothed out by coriander. Something like that. I am not an expert. But, I like to make curries.

@amerika This stuff is WAY too bitter to be anything than a small part of a big spice mix, and I have 120g of it.I'm noping the hell out. Besides, I might as well just use curry powder or paste.

@Gnomeshatecheese Sure, and I can see that point. I guess that the magic for me is that curries are not bitter in the end, but a shifting miasma of flavors. The yogurt is really important. I have also started using apple slices to start, which allows me to avoid any other sugars.

@Gnomeshatecheese Congratulations, you forfeited an oxalate bomb. It is not the health elixir it’s purported to be, quite the opposite (the dried version is even worse).

@Biff You're talking to someone who has been known to eat rhubarb raw. And who is mighty miffed her present rhubarb crop isn't nearly as strong tasting as the ones she had back in dear old Finland. Just saying.

@amerika I've come to suspect I'm unusually sensitive to bitter, as I seem to taste bitter in dishes others don't. That might go some way to explaining my aversion to things commonly labeled as bitter, which many enjoy. I'm probably somewhat undersensitive to acid though, since eating lemon slices raw is just nice and tangy for me. I even enjoy tiny amounts of wine vinegar as is.

@amerika Doubt it. If that were the case, I doubt I'd so happily chomp on extra sour things.

@amerika Well I've previously dismissed that on account of not being particularly perceptive of many other flavours, and being very happy to eat sour things. But if being extra sensitive to bitter counts as one type, then quite possibly yes.

@Gnomeshatecheese Oxalate is a universal human toxin that bioaccumulates. It’s still an ingredient in laundry detergent in India (a common suicide method). It was actually first identified as a toxin in the early 1800s by physicians observing other physicians who were consuming a lot of rhubarb and experiencing negative symptoms. Dr. Golding Bird himself died quite young, likely from oxalate poisoning. People who say they’re fine with it will have problems with gut, joints, bones, eyes, thyroid, immunity, mood, energy, and worse, and not know why. The spinach smoothie fad has done in a lot of young healthy people.

@Biff Well I've never had problems with any of those listed. I'm not going to stop enjoying my rhubarb.Going to keep staying away from spinach smoothies though, never been a fan of stuff like that.
