@Xeraser one of the many "nobody else is making anything like this" gamesindie with niche gameplay always explodes and does well.I think people also like (the appearance of) combat mechanics instead of just bashing stones in the mines. The fact that it really sucks ass mechanically doesn't matter much when your audience is casual players.

@Red_Venom @Xeraser blue haired people happens in Japanese farming sim games (Harvest Moon) too. They love weird colored characters (green hair, blue hair, etc).Gay marriage is there, but it's nothing much. They just made it so you can date and marry any of the available characters, regardless of gender.Other than that, it has a few black people and an interracial couple, but it has no bullshit non-binary characters or shit like that, so it was not loved by tourists and shitlibs for it's progressive values (besides the "marry whoever you want" thing).All in all, Stardew Valley is a farming sim with a simple art style that was available on PC at a time the alternatives were console-only, so it scratched that itch on people. And the game is actually comfy to play.Also, the best mod in the game breaks up the interracial couple and lets you date and marry Robin (the redhead carpenter girl).

@Xeraser I like it, mostly because:- It's endearing, even if the pixel art is not the best.- It has a bunch of content and it's all overall solid, none of the mechanics that I remember from the game seem half-assed, but obviously they don't have as much depth as other types of games.- It allowed me to have either quick or long play sessions, so back when it released and I was busy studying I could boot it for 15 minutes and do a lot in the game.- It's just Harvest Moon for PC with quality of life improvements.It's not that it's the best game ever, but it's a pretty solid game and in a genre that at the time was not as popular or hadn't seen any big releases on PC. Also no DLC, low price because it was an indie and has received free updates over the years.

@Xeraser The dungeons give it a fair bit of long-term value. You can do alot of automation and stuff without having to be autistic. But I agree, I think the characters and story are pretty underwhelming.
