@MSP_SMIMSA I think swords hold a certain mystique, mostly because they were developed and designed specifically for fighting other humans.Most other weapons are adapted from some other implement designed for another purpose, usually hunting or farming. The purpose of a sword is crystal clear.Also I just like them. If I was forced to pick the most effective weapon though… it’s probably a spear paired with a s shield.

@Jagahati I couldn't agree more. The sword is purpose built.I would use the spear because I am not trained in melee.Of course, we know a gun is helpful too.

@MSP_SMIMSAThe thing about spears is that work well in groups of about 4+ where you can cluster together and defend as a group. Whereas if it's just 1 spear vs 1 sword you will get absolutely demolished as they can just swipe past the end of the spear and get in close.I know this from experience. @Jagahati

@MSP_SMIMSA @ned a sword is very similar in role to the modern handgun. Typically only used for combat with other people at relatively close range. A rifle is a more effective weapon in almost all circumstances, except that it’s a pain to carry one around and it’s very clear that you have it. Spears were no different. A spear and a shield in the hands of a competent combatant were/are very effective. In groups or even single combat.I still like swords though.

@amerika @Jagahati No joke. Drones for civilian defense are going to change the landscape.Probably just paint ball pepper spray, at first.But swarms are the bullets with your name on them.Also a gun still works but not for HEMA rules.Otherwise, it's just Indiana Jones.
