The DRAM shortage is the precursor to the OS in the Cloud bullshit machines with minimal memory and storage.They'll just be these shitty consoomer portal devices, and TPTB will have every last thing you do on your computer.

@PNS Agreed.Personal computers didn't belong in the cloud, they're personal, for a reason. Like my shit, it just works and I don't need a fancy server in the cloud, just a few potatoes to run VPNs.I got my own servers.

It's not even fp at this point. Apparently a lot of the big models are running on int8 or even smaller because they figured out it doesn't really matter how much precision you have in a mathematically-glorified pile of if statements.Worse, dram is built on special lithography processes that are different from cpus. You have to have a fab specialized in dram, you can't just convert a cpu/logic chip fab into making dram, at least not trivially.

as far as the idea that they're going to try and force cloud computing on people, most people have a computer that works RIGHT NOW, it's literally gaming enthusiasts that can't get hardware to upgrade their cpu and ram so they get 5% more performance out of their game from 2016, i wanted to upgrade to am5 socket butt ram blew that boat out of the water, but i still got enough power to basically play anything on the market right now and meet any compute needs i have generally, so it's gonna be a hard sell.

"The cloud" has been around for two decades now and hasn't taken over in other price shocks. It's just too slow, shitty, and unreliable for serious users, whereas casuals already back up their phone to some money-hemorrhaging cloud storage service, the only cloud service in widespread use.It'll all reset when the investors panic and try to get some money out before any of the other investors, causing one of those "lost 70% in a single day" type crashes. Then chip companies will be sitting on piles of unsold hardware and will then try to unload it on consumers for dirt cheap, at least by current pricing standards. Datacenters might try to sell off a bunch of underutilized hardware too, or perhaps get chop-shopped by whatever vulture equity company buys them in bankruptcy.It might take a couple years though. Underclock you machines and be nice to your SSDs.
