It's even worse than that. Angela Merkel’s father, Horst Kasner, voluntarily moved his family from West Germany to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1954. He was a hyper-left wing Protestant theologian, who was extremely hostile to capitalism and any form of European rearmament. Horst genuinely believed that socialism was the true Christian alternative to the Western materialist system.Once he was actually in the GDR, he became a vocal proponent of the "Church within Socialism" (Kirche im Sozialismus). He openly advocated for an East German Protestant church that was independent of the West, a stance that aligned with the goals of the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED). Today German politics is dominated by what could be fairly described as the children of the GDR, which is ironic because most German dissident media increasingly describe the recent political shifts Germany as the descent into a "GDR 2.0".
