AI-induced cultural stagnation is no longer speculation. It's already happening https://phys.org/news/2026-01-ai-cultural-stagnation-longer-speculation.html Generative AI was trained on centuries of art and writing produced by humans.

(1/2)@stephen > this was happening anyway ('Blank Space'), connected with internet but not AI especiallyAe, this reminds me of Dead Internet Theory, which was already a thing before the release of ChatGPT pushed #MOLE Training into mainstream awareness;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Internet_theoryMovies have been feeling more and more like a regurgitation of half-digested old movies for about a decade now. Same with pop music.@davemosk

(2/2)My theory is that the current cultural malaise is driven by the centralisation of taste-making. DataFarming algorithms on a handful of mega-platforms determine what most people see. Which pushes creators to tailor their work to be attractive to those algorithms, or risk being completely ignored. With the escalating enshittification of legacy web search, one priority for the rejuvenation of culture is building portals that allow for more organic discovery, eg;https://unstream.stream/
