Ah yes, because the Russian police and special forces are, of course, world-famous for their nuanced, soft-touch approach.Who could forget such highlights as the 2002 Nord-Ost siege, where 132 hostages died? Most of these deaths were due to the effects of the fentanyl gas pumped into the theatre building by Spetsnaz operators prior to breaching.Or how about the Beslan school siege of 2004, during which Russian security forces used tanks (T-72s), flamethrowers (RPO-A Shmel), and grenade launchers to strike the school building while hundreds of hostages were still inside? During that same siege, the authorities deployed thermobaric grenades, which went on to collapse the roof of the gymnasium, killing over 100 hostages. The siege ended with 334 people dead (31 of whom were the Chechen attackers).Naturally, there is much to criticise the American government for but let's not pretend the FSB's Alpha and Vympel groups are somehow arbiters of surgical precision and proportional response.
