There's something really pretty about a bunch of yankees that take offense to the confederate flag being fucked over and prevented from leaving by the federal government.

@cjd @nerthos In this house, Sherman was an American hero, simple as. I mean, on the other end of the spectrum, we have Afghanistan, where we saw firsthand just what happened when the US spent way too long aimlessly screwing around and not actually pursuing victory.

My comment was not to that, but rather about THE PRESSURE.When you're driving down the road and a cop is following you, and you know your insurance is expired, because you can't afford to pay it, and you know if he pulls you over, he's going to impound your car, and you know that if you don't make it to work on Monday, you're going to be fired, and you know that if you miss another mortgage payment, the bank is going to take your house. When homelessness is following you down the street like a stalking wolf, that's THE PRESSURE.When you have to sign a form, and next to the signature line it tells you how many years you're going to spend in the Federal Prison if you made a mistake, that's THE PRESSURE.Everything in American culture and society is about THE PRESSURE. American life is lived on the knife-edge between homelessness, bankruptcy, prison and divorce. And I think there's an unspoken belief that it has to be that way, because if ever it should relent, then The Empire will collapse in apathy and disregard.

@cjd @nerthos The apathy and disregard is already there, but the pressure remains the same. I don't think it was pressure from above holding the country together as much as pressure from around everyone. Since the counterculture movement and Me Generation of the 70s, no one's asked to be a part of anything bigger than themselves, and that's how we've gotten to this point. Honestly, I think a lot of our problems, and for that matter, a lot of what you're seeing with those protests or how people view ICE, is people looking for a sense of togetherness that just isn't being offered by American society. And it won't be, because we have no institutions left outside of workplaces that make it painfully clear that you are disposable and meant to be exploited. To Dicey's point, we're trying to treat demoralization as depression, because again, it's easier to individualize the problem than admit that there's a very real social rot that's creating a lot of our issues. The lazy cynic in me just chalks it up to "end of an empire" shenanigans.

@cjd @mrsaturday @nerthos is that sort of thing common?although i am aware that these things can be expensive, isn't the median income dramatically above that level? car insurance is ~2k/yr, median income is ~60k, if it was a company who said they were under pressure in this situation i'd ask to look at their balance sheet. i have seen some computations, and it can indeed be troublesome, but in all of these computations they were about a guy working part time or earning below minimum for example being paid by tip. does this still happen outside of these cases?>knife-edge between homelessnessfor all of the noise that people make about housing prices in the usa, they prices are not bad. i was looking to buy a multi-family house, rent the top floor, and you can buy these in the 300k range in the periphery of several major cities, this means that a median laborer has a down payment for a two family house after working for 1 year and saving half his income.

Once you go outside of the US, you suddenly discover how American that thing really is. I don't know about Germany, UK, or Nordic states, but southern & eastern Europe is certainly not like that, nor is central America. There's a lot of things that are frustrating, but it's not THE PRESSURE trying every day to kill you.

Maybe you're okay now, but someone slips and falls on the ice in front of your house and then you won't be. Or you get some disease that costs you everything you have to not die. Nobody is entirely safe...

Yeah, I lived in Paris for 5 years and an hour outside the city for another 5 years, and it's not a nice place. It's not that bad in the way everyone thinks, but it's dirty, polluted, noisy and hard to get around, it's really a non-destination.

@cjd @mrsaturday @nerthos >get some disease that costs you everythingin this situation, by definition, you lose everything. it was chosen to be such a disease, so i am not sure this statement is very meaningful.since my initial question was, is such a thing common, should in interpret your response to mean that it is rare?certainly, such diseases exist, or you can also die in a plane crash, nobody argues that you cannot die suddenly or that you are entirely safe. but if you need heaven's intervention to be financially ruined, i think that you are not in a bad place.

Yes (probably 40%) but if you're American, it's important to understand that French black people are entirely different from American. A good way to think of it is that they're "African/French, not black", or that they're "French first, black second".The big reason for this IMO is that Africans who came to France were people who lived in French-African colonies and they excelled in what they did. Moving to France was a "promotion" - the filter preferred high quality.American blacks came from Africans that got picked up out of the jungle - and it's worse because the slave captors tended to keep the nicer ones for themselves and move the stupid, violent and uncivilized ones to the slave ship - so the filter preferred low quality. That's not to say they're Doctors And Engineers, if they were then Africa wouldn't be Africa. But while you might get pickpocketed, getting mugged is unheard of.
