Condoning everyday fascism for those less fortunate is how you eventually get fascism for all. And this isn’t just about the US. This is a warning for Europe and beyond. Here in Europe, most of our governments have been merrily supporting the US and Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza (and the ethnic cleansing, settler colonialism, and apartheid) as well as previous imperialist invasions of far off lands for oil, happily sharing in the spoils of the suffering. (Not a surprise, really. After all, who were the settler colonialists that created the US?) Frontex is our ICE-in-making. We’re handing Palantir government contacts and data on our citizens. We’re lusting to construct our own panopticons. Successive neoliberal and conservative governments have been steadily pushing the ratchet to the right while demonising those who want to protect the environment and the most vulnerable and who have the audacity to imagine a future where the basic necessities of life – food, water, shelter, healthcare – are human rights, not commodities. In other words, we’ve been playing by the same colonial/neoliberal/conservative playbook as the US (heck, maybe we even invented it)… why should we expect any other outcome if we continue to behave in exactly the same way?All this to say, if you’re fine with the boot being on someone else’s neck today, don’t be surprised when it’s on yours tomorrow. There might still be time to change things for the better. But it will not happen unless the justice we seek is justice for all.

@aral Anyone who turns a blind eye to injustice today will find oppression on their doorstep tomorrow. Change begins with awareness and taking a stand.

@LukefromDC Not to disagree, but a less bloody solution is not the fund the boot in the first place because it was going to be on someone else’s neck.

@aral @LukefromDCAlso not least because the "boot" is metaphorical* so it's important to not get lost in that rhetoric and imagery. We don't want to end up in a situation where we're talking about unlacing the boot and tickling the foot inside because we forgot reality exists.* Some notable and visceral exceptions

@aral 💯 Remember Saul William's speech at the green party event before the last US election. Infinitely better than what Carney had to say.https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=Ka7FrJVaj2M#GeneralStrike #AntiFascism #AntiColonialism

@aral #auspol Australia as well - the failure of "closing the gap", offshore detention in its many forms, support for Israel govt, support for US govt, ... Australia has this obsession with "law and order" which is a code phrase for kicking (typically non-white, but not always) minorities while they're down. I think we're never far away from a US-style collapse these days. The twin pillars of billionaires pillaging countries and ethnocentric fascism work hand in hand to concentrate wealth and divert attention.https://www.reddit.com/r/WhatIsThisPainting/comments/lfa41m/who_is_the_original_artist_of_this_political/

@aral Unfortunately, I don't think Europe is very far from reaching that point. ~20% of the population in most countries are openly voting for parties supporting fascism. At the same time more "moderate" centre-left and centre-right parties (and their supporters) have been acting increasingly more hostile against non-natives and supporting ever-increasing measures aimed against them.I believe that the anti-immigration rhetoric adopted by most major European parties paved the way for stuff like this to start happening in Europe. Just as anti-Semitism paved the way for the fascists in Germany and Italy.

@aral Merriam-Webster defines “genocide” as “the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group” (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/genocide). Collins Dictionary says “Genocide is the deliberate murder of a whole community or race” (https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/genocide).This is NOT happening in Gaza.To speak of a ‘genocide’ in this context is not just a gross exaggeration (ask Jews what a real genocide is. They know. Also October 7, when the Hamas deliberately indiscriminately murdered as many Israelis as they could, was a genuine act of genocide. What the Israeli armed forces did – including warning civilians in advance of war manoeuvres – was not. The Hamas warned nobody).Any war is ugly (the Hamas could have ended it quickly by releasing the hostages. Why were there hostages in the first place? But they preferred to keep also their people of Gaza hostages, as human shields). What you are doing is an uncritical repeating of buzzwords from Islamicist and Islamogauchiste propaganda. It is an injustice to use such terminology (an inversion and a kind of victim blaming) and it is also an affront to the Palestinians who are Israeli citizens and are serving in the Israeli armed forces. Please do not do that.
