Shouldn't the ux not crash handling link text? I understand it's a lot of mentions & that amount is crazy. But why does a mass amount of linked text cause the whole thing to crash? Something has to improve.

Well in this case, he attached almost 95,000 text blocks (the standard allowed number is like 3000-5000) so right htere he broke the standard settings. Then, he tagged 1675 DIFFERENT people. You have to understand how federation works. Like when you and I talk my instance "gets" the info from you. Your instance "gets" the info from me. When there are three people. Person 1: get person 2, get person 3. Person 2: get person 1, get person 3. Person 3: get person 1, get person 2. Then when they post, that repeats. Now imagine a thread with 1675 people and all the instances/users are sending requests and posts at once. It's like millions of federation touches. It's not a software problem, its a user breaking the software problem

I understand what your saying but isn't all software ment to be broken? Good thing the character limit will fix it. Hopefully the federation code will get better & be able to handle situations like this so the stress on instances are lighter. That sucks that someone did that causing error for your users.

It’s bad actor behavior because they know it will break the system. It’s not the devs responsibility to make code so bad actors can abuse the system. There is literally no world where a thread that big needs to exist.

Your right the person is bad acting. I use to see stuff like that mass tagging in raffles & giveaways. I'm sure on the fediverse theres no contests so theres no real reason to tag all those people. Yeah it don't need to exist & no it's not the devs responsibility to make code worse it's to make it better. Better for who? Everyone not good or bad just everyone. Do you remember when something breaks people use to patch it or create some process for handling excessive or exceptional data? I thought maybe someone could come up with a way to handle it better & somehow respect other instances character limit.There will always be one person trying to stress test or abuse the limit.

Maybe only 10% were actually active.There are some contests we do around here (the faggot tourney lol 😜 in June) so blocking tagging I don’t think is the solution because there are legitimate use cases. This is one of those situations where someone got mischievous and decided to make a scene 😅

There should at least be error handling to drop the requests if thresholds are exceeded without taking the whole instance offline, that doesn't seem like too much to ask for 🤷♀️
