       @HeavenlyPossum This is such a complex issue that I don't want to say this but 'The Institution' is always - by definition - a subset of the general populace; for example ICE and Immigration etc. are self-selecting subsets of the U.S. population who are (presumably) attracted by job security and the 'keep  us safe' argument against a broad-brush, self-selecting subset of the Minneapolis population. So the issue is NOT the institution but the discrepancy between it's ideals and those who either

       @HeavenlyPossum @richpuchalsky ICE isn’t a Police force.  Policemen don’t wear face masks.  ICE is a right-wing goon squad carefully deployed to destabilize civic society.  Abolish away.  But one of my neighbors is a county sheriff who regularly risks his life to make this county a better place to live and raise a family.  He wears no mask because his is an honorable profession.  There’s a difference.

       @Hordearius @HeavenlyPossum I’ve been hassled by town and county law enforcement for:jogging by the side of a country road at nightwaiting to meet someone in a town park with a bicyclewalking my child home from the hospital when they were bornhauling water from a neighbour’s well (by their invitation)walking to a train station at dusk after hitchhiking failedaka, existing without a car outside a city.that last one involved a blinding flashlight to the face and their hands on sidearms while telling me to get out of town and demanding to know if i had a weapon.i’m sure these cops and their neighbours thought they were making their county safer too.
