You talking about those random penguins that just leave the group and run out into random directions that are nothing by sold ice for thousands of kilometers? I remember seeing that in the Encounters at the End of the World documentary from 2007, where the filmmaker asked, "Can penguins go insane?" The researchers don't want to interfere, so they just stand there on camera as they watch penguins leave the migration and head off into the middle of nowhere. I thought it was an evolutionary response myself. Sure a few of them will die each time, but should the conditions ever change, some of those lil guys will eventually find new food and breeding grounds ... probably how all the others ended up where they are today.

oh wow. Yes, that's from Encounters at the End of the World ! It's really good. Didn't know it was making the rounds almost a decade later. I think it's from the same funding grand that led to March of the Penguins, but Encounters is really focused more on the individual researcher and support laborers who applied for those jobs in that last frontier of our planet. The absolutely most insane place to live. Antarctica.
