@judgedread The only way you're going to sell 100 million+ units at $20,000 a pop is if they're sex-bots. If they're going to be working in factories, farms, and warehouses they'll need a 10 year lifespan and cost less to run per year than the cost of a minimum wage human worker over the same time period.

@Charles_in_Charge Amortized over five years a $40,000 robot (the 20k is the PROFIT, not the price) sets you back $8k annually, or about $154 a week. Assuming it can only work 40 hours that's $3.85 an hour, considerably below the minimum wage and with no health care or worker's compensation costs or legal risk from the 'employee' itself. A robot will never sue for discrimination, will never complain, will never pilfer from the supply closet.Double the cost and it can still replace most workers, yielding massive savings.
