I got annoyed with my sister for freaking out about the storm in Alabama and not having any supplies. Like are you retarded? You live in an area with tornados and you've been there 2 years now. You should have a kit. I told her to go check the thrift store for propane camp stoves so she can cook if she needed to.... Among other things.

@prettygood I did buy milk and bread, but I get those every time I go to the grocery. Didn't buy any more than I usually do. Even if I lose power, I don't think I've ever lost gas, so I can still cook. Another reason to not have an all electric house.

@madison @Will2Power I've had three power outages of ~36h in the last five years. I got a generator full of gas, 7 gallons more on stand by, propane space heater, wood for the fireplace, shelf-stable meals to feed three people for *weeks*, first aid, liquor, raw materials, TP, bottled water, so on and so forth. It takes exactly one (1) instance of being cold, alone, fucked-off, in the dark, to make you say "never again"

We have some propane space heaters that are fantastic. Our old house lost power once a month, minimum, due to wind storms. So we ended up getting a solar setup because that's way too often. Wish I could convince my sister to get some backup batteries at least

@prettygood @madison It's rarely ever that cold here. I did lose power for five days to a week a couple years ago but the main thing was that it was hot. For me I just thought, "Cool, I don't have to go to work!" and chilled on my couch. I had canned food and water, so it was sorta whatever.

Yup! When our son was a newborn and we lived in town we all lost power on our island for 2 days. It was winter and cold. At the time we just had some backup batteries and Tyler lit a fire and we moved the mattress in the living room. But it was still dark and gloomy and I was bored out of my mind! We quickly started stocking up and when we moved we lost power often due to the wind. So solar was next.... Plus Tyler got a diesel boat generator off Craigslist and rigged it up to run off of waste motor oil. So we'd run that to boost the batteries. Was pretty neat actually. But after an hour the Internet would go out so that was lame because we were to rural and had zero cell reception at the house.

@madison @Will2Power yeah I live in a brick house with a metal roof at the bottom of a very deep valley, I have to walk ½ mile down the road to get cell signal. And if our power is out, the ISP gear on the poles is out too, so yeah. Books and LED lights and so on.I need to spend the money to get a whole house nat gas generator setup, I literally live in a coal field, the gas is *right there* on my own property.

That's pretty cool. Is your house in the shade at the bottom of the valley? Our old place was shaded most of the time so when we got snow it would melt down the property and you'd see where the shade was. Would be an interesting sight. I had to call EMS for our neighbor who had a stroke but my phone wouldn't dial over Wi-Fi so I had to run to the end of the road and make the call

@madison @Will2Power the holler runs north-south and the house is oriented to match, so the south end with the sun room gets a lot of sun, at least between like, 11 and 3, this time of year. On the longest days, its like 9-5 sun on the south side. And yeah needless to say I pay for a VOIP line for a terrestrial telephone. Sure it relies on my ISP still, but its been very reliable, if my power is up the internet is up, generally.

@scathach @prettygood @hakui you could do that or make two weeks worth of beef chili at 25 bucks s batch that will keep sans refridgeration or dry into cowboy blocks and not mess up your gut microbiome

@prettygood @ink @scathach @hakui if something has enough salt and acid it can be somewhat shelf stable , but why tho. i think fats tend to go rancid when trying to ferment food too? made a bunch of chili yesterday, imo it improves in the fridge after a day or so, cant see how fermenting it would improve it. keeping chili on the counter for weeks sounds like weird hippie nazi diet plan shit.

@scathach @prettygood @hakui i am speaking from experience living innawoods for some months but i made chili with fatty ground beef, corn, beans, onion, dried mexican chiles, tomatoes, and tomato paste in a large steel poti fed it to a bavarian tourist from /out/ who visited me in the forest knowing his euro palate wouldn't handle the spice and gave him some walmart chocolate puff cakes acquired in anticipation of his reaction to which he graciously thanked me for the sweet reliefUnless its over 76 F outside it will keep for a while if you keep the pot closed, i have heard months or years in hotter climate if you dry it into blocks trail wagon style and its all about sealing moisture and killing microbes with additivesOn a related note scath a lot of your posts remind me of a younger diy ted k mindset i had earlier in my life and you should limit your scope and not try to larp as a scrappy wasteland scavenger, part of what made the Comanche so powerful is while they grew up doing insane prairie survival feats they used a lot of modern supply chains to their advantage and cut deals between more backwards tribes and the modern colonial texmex periphery economy and as a trans person you are better off getting wise about building social support at this stage in your life than making prep kits that will likely never be used
