@hfaust USE BITLOCKER THEY SAID. IT'S SAFE THEY SAID. ENCRYPTION WORKS TO KEEP THE FEDS OUT THEY SAID. Then they gave backdoor keys to the glowniggers. But really, whym'st is their backdoors built-in to Bitlocker? It really is all fake and gay.

@catmanmancat @hfaust you must use the encryption we want you to use. We will make open source encryption illegal because you aren't allowed to hide things from us.I love how they keep making more advertisements for people to use a different operating system.

@catmanmancat @hfaust It's not backdoored, they just default to making a copy of your keys to The Cloud which they happen to have access to.They probably have a million customer service events where this is helpful behavior every year, but it's not especially secure if you're actually doing sensitive things.

@Zettour @hfaust I get that. I would consider *any* method of breaking encryption to be a backdoor. After all the very definition is implying access against your will thus "coming in through the back door." Just because it's not a Trojan secretly opening a port & transmitting data doesn't make it less malicious.

@catmanmancat @hfaust Proving once again enhanced security is a waste. We're all technically better off just doing our thing, but making it seem like our living spaces are rigged to blow the whole block if the cops come knocking.

@hfaust Who would have thought that "securing" your bitlocker encryption by connecting it to your Microsoft account for possible recovery would make this possible.

@mirq @hfaust This is different. You connect your microsoft account and bitlocker together, so your recovery keys are attached to your microsoft account at all times for when you need to recover.Instead of printing your recovery key on a piece of paper and putting it somewhere, you now log into your microsoft account and get the recovery key for emergency decryption from there. It's a completely stupid thing to do for anyone that knows what encryption is supposed to do. Which also is the crowd that uses VeraCrypt instead of Bitlocker.

@phnt @hfaust @mirq it's a double whammy of bullshit: the person who is going to do this is gonna lose his MS account or use a dummy account just to pass the setup (and then be BONED for motherboard swaps)

@phnt @hfaust will do, need background watching rnThis guy's shorts are okay in small amounts but I've never watched a full length vid from him lolI only encrypt my laptop but it doesn't really have sensitive info directly on it, just ssh keys really. But my threat model is and always has been "crackhead yoinked my bag" so the idea is to make it hard for them to do anything with and not to protect data I care about haha

@Zettour @catmanmancat @hfaust IIRC the storing your keys in the cloud thing is actually mandatory for Home editions of Windows 10. They only let you make offline bitlocker encrypted drives on Pro versions.

@Zettour @catmanmancat @hfaust >It's not backdoored, >Describes backdoor where the keys are being uploaded to microsoft's servers.Yes, the keys being uploaded to microsoft servers happens to be practical useful in the increasingly common case where windows or the garbage hardware shits itself, as you need the key to access the drive contents. The correct soution to the problem, is to encrypt the drive keys with the password and store them on the drive, like what LUKS does, but microsoft does not do that for purely malicious reasons.
