Back during the 80's, they made a fully-automated Taco Bell. No human workers. Ingredients go in, finished food comes out. It was way faster and made no mistakes. For practically every farm over a certain size, their margins get eaten for lunch because some boomer at some point in time signed on a dotted line somewhere in the name of convenience. They all at some point agreed to sell their crop to a faceless market collective that they don't control at prices set by global supply chains, not understanding the concept of arbitrage and how global market undercut local production at the whim of commodity traders who absolutely collude on pricing. The boomer farmers of old also passed the debt practice of financing every operational cost on to their kids who are too dumb to look at the mechanics of how their livelihood is managed for them and now they're all stuck in this debt cycle as global serfs because there is no sustainable market in the region for locally grown produce.

@christmasman the problem is that for farmers they had to plant way before they knew what the market would look like for their goods, so having assurances they weren't going to get screwed wasn't the worst.I don't really have a good answer on how to fix this, but I think at some point when the food production chain became industrialized enough, it became powerful enough to really squeeze the farmers very hard as it had the excess capital to throw around to do that.
