Fucking piece of shit dash cam didn't see fit to record someone pulling out in front of me at a crawl, nor some Jeeptard driving on the wrong side of the road and swerving away at the last second.

@prettygood Every dash cam I've owned has been shit. They all just randomly stop recording or have their dates reset because including a rtc chip in them is too goddamn expensive apparently.

@sparkler this one I have keeps time well and has GPS, which is nice. I figured out that you have to manually hit a button to get it to permanently keep a recording, otherwise it only keeps what it *thinks* is important.

@prettygood @sparkler when i got my dashcam my main requirement was that it always records to an sd card. i don't want to be saying "ok garmin" when my mind should be on driving. it's pretty nice, i just plug it into my cigarette adapter whenever i leave the house and plug it out when i park. it's basically a routine

@VIPPER dude I live on a one-lane road in a long isolated holler, 90% chance they live within a mile of me. Next white Jeep I see is getting the worst insult I can give (not waving)

@zonk @prettygood The cigarette lighter in my car doesn't provide power without the car running, so don't need to worry about that.Problem is all these dash cams have some internal battery that just drains itself if you don't drive constantly, which causes the clock to reset and whoops, now the new recordings are the oldest recordings on the SD Card since everything else is in the future!I don't care about crash detection or any other nonsense, just loop record. That's all I want.

@sparkler @zonk IDK man I go 5 days without driving all the time and the battery in mine still records me walking in front of the car with the dog every night.

@sparkler @prettygood my dashcam is pretty smart. it doesn't record when the cigarette lighter is unplugged, but it uses its battery to keep the clock alive. ive never had it reset the time on me. also, my car is weird, and provides power even when it's off, so i have to unplug my damn dashcam so it doesn't kill my battery lol

@zonk @sparkler Ford just doesn't give a shit man. Like they're making "vehicles" to get government contracts, they don't give a flying fuck about consumers anymore, and they haven't since like 2015.

@prettygood @sparkler i have a 2013 escape so im probably at the tail end of that era. perhaps it's the first car effect but i think they fucking nailed it, i have everything i could want except for a backup camera (although im not the most picky consumer, literally all i need is android auto for my non-distracting navigation)

@zonk @sparkler my car's a 2014, but Toyota doesn't often miss anyway. I'm in the same boat where I wish I had a backup cam but otherwise I adore my box. I can haul lots of shit, stick an appliance in the back, carry 4 passengers, we do road trips in here. Square is the shape cars were meant to be.

@prettygood @sparkler but i do have some pretty insane creature comforts, like a full sized outlet in the rear (hello starlink mini), motorized trunk, working a/c and an upgraded head unit (that i immediately threw out and re-upgraded). and the previous owner(s) took incredible care of the car, it's pushing 150k miles without much of a sweat or huge maintenance items (knock on wood). i will drive my baby into the ground ‼️

@prettygood @sparkler that is true, although toyota's newer cars are a bit iffy. the airbag scandal still haunts me a little bit...and, based. if your car can't fit an appliance, you're better off riding public transportation (if it exists). if i can't throw my life into my car in a few hours and drive off, or haul the occasional trade booth for work, it's ridiculous to have.i like that i can camp in my suv, like properly camp with an air mattress and sleeping bag, fully stretched out. you just can't do that in a sedan (although you can park a lot easier in cities!!!!!!!)

@zonk @prettygood @sparkler i have a 2010 2500 suburban and when i moved from VA to AL for work i actually was able to pack up my whole life in a few hours and move on very short notice. even had a mattress and a couch tied to the roof racks and everything. it's fun to be able to do that lmao. and yeah i've gone camping in it too, there was a state park that was known for stargazing and they just let people park in the parking lot for no extra cost other than general entry into the park.

@prettygood @sparkler @zonk even if i could afford a new truck i'm pretty cooked on getting one. i'm pretty set on keeping my suburban until i die. 216k miles and still going baby
