@Ghislaine Forecast: EU-China shipping might be significantly cheaper and faster through the Arctic as that opens up, when compared to shipping through the Middle East.Problem: US and Israel (but I repeat myself) has bases all over the Middle East, have big plans for new canals to bypass the Suez, and see a lot of potential power in any future conflict from this positioning. None of this is true of the Arctic where only Russia has a significant presence.Problem #2: Russia is also the only power with significant icebreaking ability, which matters because global warming is kinda dragging its feet.Solutions:a. take a strong stand in favor of open seas, and against piracy, maybe have a whole branch of the military with an anthem whose first few lines is about a historical anti-piracy action. Use this consistent position, backed with force, and bind Russia into agreement with it. Buy/lease a bunch of nuclear icebreakers from Russia ("free trade" option. Ignore!)b. provoke a totally pointless conflict with Russia that makes all parties much more hostile - to trade, and cooperation, and in general. (Israeli option. Deny the arctic!)c. regime-change Putin with sanctions that totally work really well, break up the "prison of nations" into a bunch of small countries, and rule over the defeated people with an iron fist, enslaving the icebreakers at a greater cost and less return vs. buying them. (Overtly the US Imperial option, covertly the Israeli option again, because chaos will still deny the arctic.)
