#microfiction #wasps #hymenoptera “Its like how I’ve heard your kind describe the galls you get in your teeth—““you mean cavities!?”“Just so! It is like how when examined by the tongue the cavity is said to seem large. And yet, in reality it is small. That is how it is with mine ovipositor. I can see the cell walls, yes, the holy scriptures in the language of the enzymes… and I just reach in and? I make little correction. I make little change. That is how I make the gall.”1/

I still didn’t feel like I understood. Yet, I had to set the wasp right on one troubling matter. “Madam Wasp? Please understand that the cavities in our teeth are not galls. They are nothing like galls.”“Oh. what a pity. Teeth seem like such a nice safe place to put your child—““I promise you they are not at all suited to your needs.”“Oh. Oh well then.” she huffed.I was mostly confident the notion had abandoned her. But, I kept my mouth tightly closed.2/2

@futurebird this also reminds me of the unfortunate(?) engineer from Sunless Sea whose eyes have been taken by gall-blighter wasps (https://sunlesssea.fandom.com/wiki/Gall-Eyed_Engineer).

@futurebird No wasps. A "monster in a cave" fantasy novel. Queerness, disability, generational trauma. Protagonist avoids building a nest in anyone. And a very large bear named Blueberry.
