@bazkie@beige.partyI think it's a very healthy thing to wave back and have fun, but a lot of people — especially here on Fedi, tend to overthink things: "Why would I be waving back? They don't even see me!" or "If others were watching, waving at the TV would make me look stupid" — and they become joyless people instead of enjoying the moment nobody else cares about: there's no one watching them to think they are stupid, and there's no reason to think about whether people on TV can see them, it's for them alone to enjoy — and yet… 😩

@m0xEEEven if someone was watching me, what could they do? Judge me for joy? What a silly thing.@bazkie

@ozzelot@mstdn.social @bazkie@beige.partyThis way of thinking takes a healthy mind and self-esteem, while a lot of people are "OMG, am I doing something wrong? Again?! 🥺"

@m0xEE @bazkie Well, if I'm watching something alongside someone, I'm probably already reasonably comfortable with them, so if they can't handle me at my silliest, what are we doing.(I rarely watch sports events though, and I'm definitely not the type to see them live or watch them on a pub TV or something. But if I did those things, I think I'd still wave back.)

@ozzelot@mstdn.social @bazkie@beige.partyso if they can't handle me at my silliest, what are we doingAre you kidding me? A lot of women suck in their belly during sex to impress their partner — the society made us this way, so at times we keep complying with the expectations even with those whom we are supposed to trust. I wish I could say I'm not like that — but I know that in a lot of cases I still am. When it's something important to you, you might choose to act out and go against the expectations, but in a lot of cases most never bother. And watching a sport event at a sports bar? It might be a bit different from culture to culture and now things are certainly changing for the better, but most would probably still go with the "macho man" stereotype and not act silly even when it's fun, although we might do equally silly and unreasonable things if they fit the stereotype 😅I like how this is played on in The IT Crowd, when two geeky main characters go to a sports bar to become more "manly" — others make them feel like they fit in and they are quite happy, but through this they get manipulated into taking part in bank robbery and become scapegoats. But in the end things do not go this way — precisely because, contrary to what is expected from them, they do not act "manly" 😂

@m0xEE @ozzelot exactly, they couldn't change who they really are!I will admit I also used to do a lot of social adaptation to "belong", luckily as one grows older they tend to give less fucks, so these days I can be silly without shame most of the time. but I do understand it's not always so easy.

@bazkieYeah, I used to do a good amount of very taxing masking. During covid lockdowns when I was left to my own devices, I dropped a lot of that (and solidified my gender or lack thereof), and then during my year-long streak of unemployment, I dropped some more adaptive strategies. I may pretty much walk alone for a while, but I don't mind.@m0xEE
