@ArmchairEconomist01 You have no idea how expensive renting a moving truck is. When we left Sacramento it ended up being cheaper to rent a truck in Reno, drive up there to pick it up, bring it back, then move.

I've heard that the net out-migration from California is such that UHaul has to dead head trucks back. For me I would like to escape the 9.3% marginal income tax, for which I get schools that don't teach, free gibs for browns, and a government that will literally cut your kid's genitals off.

@pinemarten @ArmchairEconomist01 I moved to a small town in the deep red South. I promised myself that after the move I wasn't going to be one of "those" Californians. I no longer vote. I look at it like I'm a refugee. This place and these people were kind enough to take me in. That being the case, it would be wrong for me to begin telling them who their politicians should be, what their laws should be, etc. I mind my business, pay my taxes, try to be a quiet, good neighbor, respect the way people do things, and if I live here the rest of my life and am buried in the local cemetery I will count myself luck.Even though this place is much better, much more peaceful, and much much less "diverse" than the place I left, there's still the occasional drug addict, the odd confused young person, the random lefty. But the kind of suffocating phoniness, the ever present threat of crime/violence, and never ending shit-libbery nonsense is missing. It's certainly not perfect, but it's so much better than Sacramento. I'd make the same move again in a heart beat. I just suggest you remember you're a guest in someone else's home, a refugee. Don't come into some else's house and begin to rearrange their furniture. A little appreciation and humility goes a long way.

That's it.The key for folks moving into the South is simple. Be a good guest. Have some reverence for the culture that attracted you in the first place. Recognize the slower pace, the gentile and wonderful accents, and know you are mostly welcome until you make yourself a pariah.For many "bad" Yankees, they damn themselves with grating voices and terrible attitudes within moments of stepping foot on our hallowed ground. @RebelDirtFarmer @pinemarten @ArmchairEconomist01 I think my nephews are doing good. All the older women they work with call them 'hon. One of them gave them her husband's power recliner because he got a new one, and one of the girls they work with just gave them a bunch of cloths that belonged to their boyfriend. Supposedly he didn't need them any more. This after I told them both they needed to find a girlfriend, if only so there would be someone to buy them cloths and get them to dress properly. They've both said they are going to hold off on women for a couple three years so they can pay off most of the balance of the house. Part of me is proud of them and their discipline, the other half wants to wrap them in the head with a stick and tell them to get on with life and get a girlfriend.

Fully vaxed and boosted. He was working in high tech and is now taking a bus to adult daycare. He's 63. The cases just keep piling up.

In my younger days I worked in a hospital & hospice. It seemed like a house of horrors in every room. Some died peacefully with morphine patches . Others died horrifically, also with morphine patches.I have stories I could tell you that can't even be put into horror movies.

My husband had a horrible death in a hospital and my Mom in hospice where all 6 of us kids sat vigil for 10 days. It was peaceful as we all kept pushing the buttons and kept her unconscious. She would have loved having us all there playing cards and doing puzzles and reminiscing.

I think about this all the time, and fear it. My father and grandfather both had long, horrific declines. I will not be in any situation like @mjdigspigs describes, sadly.
