with Meta backing out of VR and 'the metaverse' and all that, I hope people realize this is far from the end for VR-which should be obvious to many perhaps, but what may be less obvious is that the same applies to AI/ML.Just because some big corporations are doing AI doesn't mean that's all there's to it.and having followed AI since 2010 ish, it's somewhere between heartbreaking and frustrating most people only know the 'metaverse version' and hope for its demise

Vr requires a lot of extra empty floor space, which is something zoomers and younger can't now or ever have, and nobody older has the knees for those kinds of games anymore, so it's doa as a mass market consumer tech on purely demographic grounds. AR is the growth market; canceling glas was perhaps the single dumbest thing google ever did.

that said, if the big corp AI stuff falls over that might just be a good thing for sustainable development, and I'm not saying you should go get chatGPT or whatever, but I am somewhat disheartened to see how many people are, without nuance, without understanding, against 'all of AI' and impliedly also against 'all of ML' when objectively there have been many improvements everyone is already using that come from these sectors.Don't forget ML engineers are people too.

I may be the only person who gets a Steam Frame when it comes out, but I am getting one. VR is just plain fun. Also, not every game requires moving around a bunch or even standing up at all. Racing and flight sims just have you sitting there, but you can look around and enjoy as long as you're not prone to motion sickness (which of course you're not or you wouldn't enjoy those things enough to do them in VR anyway).

@nicholas I mean there's a few things to be said here:- Google Glass is alive actually, just look at IO 2025- the amount of space it requires depends on your games- but even if you do want space, modern headsets are independent and use inside-out tracking, so you can use them e.g outdoors if you'd want, or in any arbitrary room.- while I also hate the housing market in many places, it's not like houses stopped existing altogether, it's just a constrained market, but many people do have one.
