I hate how unreliable the universal clipboard is on #macos and #ios. For a feature that #Apple promotes as one of the benefits and conveniences of using its devices and operating systems, this “unpredictably works for a while then doesn’t work for a while until it does again” behavior is unacceptable.

I found the command below on Reddit and it appears to be helping (seems to work better with a cut than a copy). But you know that stereotype that Linux is too hard to use because you have to go looking for terminal commands on forums? defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.coreservices.useractivityd.plist ClipboardSharingEnabled 1

I was fine with that when I used Linux as my main OS, but no one ever promised that “it just works” because the OS and hardware were so tightly integrated.

@EpiphanicSynchronicity Forced to use Mac at work right now. My take is that each os comes with their own learning curve. Most of my pain right now is switching between linux and mac keyboard layouts 😅

@toolsontech @EpiphanicSynchronicity agree on learning curves. however, a lot of techies are complaining about the latest macos (tahoe?) for many reasons.also MS did something with the clipboard in windows that made it not work how it did in the past and someday i'll care enough to leave windows or fix the registry.for example, screenshots used to be jpegs, now they're png. so to post here i have to mspaint it first to save as jpeg so it's 8 times smaller.clipboards!

@picofarad @toolsontech I’ve used Windows, Linux, and Mac and I’m fine with learning curves. I actually prefer the Mac’s use of command as the primary modifier key rather than control, and if I ever heavily use Windows or Linux again I’ll look for a way to emulate that.Tbf, I never had a universal clipboard before I started using Apple products. I just don’t like that something they promote doesn’t work so often. But mostly I’m happy with MacBooks and okay with iPhones.

@EpiphanicSynchronicity what's the difference between command and 'control'? the original macs (and maybe the II series of apple computers) had option and command keys. is it because it's closer to the space bar?

@picofarad Yep, it’s closer to the spacebar and a shorter reach. I have big hands and still prefer it for that reason. There’s still a control key in the usual position. One of the interesting things it’s used for are a subset of emacs style keybindings that macOS natively supports. It’s also used for navigating Spaces, aka virtual desktops.

@latein @EpiphanicSynchronicity @toolsontech does that let you do square, rectangular, multi-screen, single window captures, too? There was some screenshot utility i used to use, aperture or something a decade and a half ago.speaking of "file destination" did you know windows saves all screenshots in your user folder? I don't want it, they are ephemeral until i commit them to disk (mine, or someone else's).believe me i hate windows. And i use(d) gentoo, but i use the arch docs all the time.

@picofarad @EpiphanicSynchronicity @toolsontech window capture and rectangle select yes, square select no, probably not multi-screen, but I have no such setupthe one my system came with also dumped screenshots into home root, so I redirected them to Pictures by changing one line
