Enforcing your visa laws is on the same level of totalitarianism as arresting people for trespassing. In a normal, sane, well-adjusted, functioning society, accidental or petty trespassing gets a warning or perhaps a small fine along with of course having to leave the property. Trespassing maliciously to commit other, more serious crimes gets a much higher penalty, but it's not some 1984 shit. The only reason ICE has to be so kitted up is all the psycho leftists that are causing problems. Even nabbing mafia members doesn't generally require that much gear (as seen in other states) because you just snatch them when they're at home in their boxers, not when they're at the meth lab with all their guns and buddies. The whole fiasco is leftist karens trying to destroy their own country out of pure mental retardation.

Land out west is often poorly marked. Fencing is expensive, even the cheapest possible barbed wire. Often there are unmarked fences crossing randomly through public land, so even the presence of a fence doesn't really mean much. In Montana, you can't even legally trespass someone if your land isn't clearly marked, because how else would somebody know?Likewise, a legal tourist who overstays their visa a little bit should get a warning or a small fine. A legal temporary resident who overstays for a modest amount of time (like less than a year) with a decent reason (like issues with jobs or paperwork or whatever) should at most get a modest fine, and, if they get their residency status in order subsequently, shouldn't even be required to leave and then come back (senseless). Someone who just fucking hops the border fence with no visa should be dragged off in cuffs and banished for life. Someone who hopped the fence and then committed a felony (like welfare fraud, for example) should face a long sentence in a self-funded prison where if they don't work hard enough to cover their cost to keep then they don't eat.
