Most people don't actually grow up to become adults except physically. They're just teenagers with jobs, relationships, and responsibilities they're still emotionally immature and unprepared for. And that's the best case scenario. A lot of them are emotionally toddlers.

I'm not saying I'm mature either. It's taken me decades to reach the level of a moderately competent high schooler or twenty-year-old. But I didn't have a childhood or adolescence or a loving family or anyone to teach me things. I had to reboot and start over with nothing.

All I've got is a certain amount of "emotional intelligence" and enough book learning to know when other people are bullshitting or have trapped themselves in unhealthy relationships.

I've also realized I'll never have the social experience or the kinds of friendships or mentoring that would actually prepare me for bigger and better things. In fact, I won't ever have access to the standard class markers of maturity like a house and family. So there's nothing per se to work towards in the first place.I'm just here to write stories and pay the bills and snuggle with my boyfriend and our cat until I die.

There's a short story in the current book I'm working on about running into someone from your past and realizing they've completely left you behind, but at the same time, they've left behind everything that made them interesting and worth knowing in the first place. So maybe there's a place for being defiantly mediocre when that's all you've got.
