@inthehands At some point you've got to accept the fact that the status quo wasn't sustainable and that if something wasn't done collapse was inevitable, and by waiting so long to take action, entrenched forces require it be more radical, violent, and disruptive than it have had to been if borders were respected and laws enforced all along. If we believe we can and should accept more immigrants, then that should have been a national discussion and accommodation, not a rogue movement where we don't know the backgrounds, many don't know the language, many are resistant to integrating with our culture, and the resources necessary to accommodate them are in place.

@RustyFreewheel @inthehands Yea the way the Canadians handled Covid, the Truck convoys, that's something I really want to emulate, no thanks, I don't like the way Canada does things, my government does things, the UK does things, Australia does things, China does things, etc, so rather than playing tribe wars I prefer to focus on solutions.

@inthehands I am deeply concerned that this is prelude to him declaring martial law which is prelude to him suspending elections. I wish some of our congressional representatives would remember they swore an oath to uphold the constitution--not to do whatever the leader of their party says regardless of constitutionality or legality.

@onorio @inthehands Maybe if we are explicit replacing the pronoun 'this' with the action(s) you are referring to and 'him' with the person you are speaking to, and if it is Trump I would bring to your awareness his age and just how long he could continue if elections were postponed which honestly I doubt.

@inthehands it might be that well-trained & disciplined troops are preferable to ICE thugs.

@peterbrown @inthehands Might be that not allowing things to get out of hand in the first place would have been preferable to the use of force of any kind, but when it's degenerated to this degree you no longer have the time or economic resources for disciplined troops, still I think calling someone a thug because they shot someone trying to run them over a bit of a stretch and an unethical one at that.

@bruchpilot @inthehands There is an old saying, absolute power corrupts absolutely, don't know if anyone else has noticed but I don't see a party attached to that.

@nanook @inthehands okay let’s be clear . The ICE agents at the Border in the main are career agents who have been with the Service for 10, 20 years. In general, they are not thugs. They are the C of ICE.But the I of ICE are an entirely different story. In the main they are untrained and unvetted and yes, they treat people worse than the playground bully. To make matters worse the politicians have given them immunity to prosecution so they can do what they like

@peterbrown @inthehands They are not thugs, yet I was personally victimized by same. So you take an incident where one agent shoots a woman trying to drive over her and declare them all thugs, and this misses the point that things should not have been allowed to deteriorate to this point in the first place and now that it has the time and resources to do better aren't there, so we are left with do the best we can because that's all that we can do.

@nanook @inthehands I made no reference to that incident. You did.But I have seen countless footage on other incidents on which to base my assessment. Here’s some more.:https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:5o6k7jvowuyaquloafzn3cfw/post/3mctemrgxtk2d

@peterbrown @inthehands Oh then you're calling them the thug just because it's a good label to smear them with without any basis? Leave things open to assumptions and assumptions happen.

@peterbrown @inthehands There is a lot of accusation in that link but little substance, but this is my experience with Bluesky, they tend to be rather politically one sided echo chamber and hurl insults and accusations at the other without much grounds so I generally avoid it for that reasons.

@inthehands I have a genuine question regarding #USpol. Does the government have any input, or is policy solely dictated by #Trump via Executive Orders? That's certainly how it looks to us here in the UK.

@dissident @inthehands I realize foreigners may not have a good understanding of how the US government works, but the President as defined by the constitution is not the same as a Premier or a King or many other political figures, rather there are three branches, each have their roles and they are less cleanly defined as we might like and continuously arbitrated and negotiated. It is inefficient, slow, messy, but adaptive.

@bruchpilot @inthehands It seems your president is very actively working to abolish it, though. There is so much implied here I am not sure where to start unwinding, first the United States is not and was not founded as a Democracy but rather as a Democratic Republic and there is a substantial and I believe valuable difference between the two, the former provides no protection against the tyranny of the masses and I believe that is a non-trivial element. That aside, Trump as President is one branch of three, branches, he does not make laws, he does tell his administration what should be prioritized, he is commander in chief of military, he can make treaties and appoint officials but both of those require congressional ratification, he is responsible for upholding the law but for better or worse has leeway on where the emphasis goes, and he is head diplomat, head of state. That said he is temporary, a term lasts four years, a max of two, he's like an Uber driver for the country, he's in it for this ride but in another three years it will he somebody else. All that said, I voted for him this term because in his previous term he managed not to involve us in new wars, and I had hoped for more of the same, but he's involved us in new wars both direct and by proxy and he's funded wars, this is my greatest disappointment and disagreement him.

@nanook @inthehands oh well in that case, if you avoid the sources of information, then obviously you can preserve your opinion. And if you’re white and live in a white area, then you will never actually see incidents developing. But clearly, you agree with the overall thrust of the President’s policy of removing immigrants so perhaps we can put this discussion on hold for a few years and see how it all pans out.

@peterbrown @inthehands I prefer looking at issues from every angle possible not just one. I feel it leads to a better appreciation of the issue and opens up more avenues for solutions. I understand that requires a degree of emotional resilience not everyone is emotionally comfortable with. This is why I do not try to limit my social media nodes to a particular political viewpoint. All that I ask is that people avoid anything illegal and ad hominem attacks, free to discuss and criticize, even attack ideas, not people. I feel only by viewing from all angles can you get a useful understanding.

@inthehands I haven't seen any statement from the commanders of the unit mentioned that they will refuse this obviously illegal order. That silence speaks volumes. (Kindly correct me if I've overlooked something.)

@oheso @inthehands I am afraid in this term I have to agree, in the previous however quite the opposite, he settled things down with North Korea, at least had some meaningful talks with others. But this term so far not so much.
