RE: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/115924028281889489i did not understand this until I tried to run Linux on a new thinkpad after years of running it on old computers

New hardware can be painful early on, but it’s not a rule.My ThinkPad T14 is new and Linux works perfectly. Kernel + firmware maturity matters more than age.

@b0rk as far as I know the models that are sold with Linux are the models where everything works fine, because they make sure everything works. This is the reason you can't get an X1 with the OLED 120hz screen shipped with Linux, the option with the good screen has a non-supported webcam and the store automatically changes the screen if you choose Linux (not sure why the screen is tied to the webcam choice). I still wanted the good screen so went with it and everything but the webcam works fine.

@b0rk I have a T480 (~6 years old) where it took many years until the fingerprint sensor was finally working. The NFC reader does not work to this day.I think with linux fanbois, the problem is that they don't know what *working* means. They don't have high standards.– They say it's working– I ask about power management, graphics acceleration, drag&drop, printing that doesn't look like absolute ass– they are bewildered that I could even *think* this might be working *by default*.

@claudius @b0rk blaming 'linux fanboys' because lenovo or whoever doesn't ship working free software drivers for their hardware is kinda missing the point** they are trying to remove freedom from society **

@b0rk I guess I'm just lucky, the new ThinkPad I use at work has had 0 issues so far, the previous one only had like 2 minor annoyances.

@b0rk This used to be common, but it hasn't been my experience in years. The new Thinkpads I've bought run Fedora just fine on day 1. It helps to stick to models that don't ship with nvidia GPUs.

@dgold that’s awesome, that’s what I hoped would happen to me since i had so many positive experiences running linux on thinkpads in the past but it didn’t.
