Zohran is expanding the number of public toilets in NYC and improving how the existing ones are cleaned and maintained. If this is a big enough initiative it will have a huge impact on quality of life for new yorkers. I don't know if it is big enough. Nonetheless *this* is the way to address the things that make people feel like the city is a dump. It's also just... civilized. IDK. How do you call it a city and you have no bathrooms?Anyway welcome to communism.

@futurebird I cannot stress enough how public toilets are necessary for the non cis male public. Whenever I travel, or even when I just leave home for a few hours it is an issue. Especially for those who can't afford cafés and such. Shops used to have toilets over here whenever they had a seated area. Now you're lucky to find one and not pay a Euro for it.

@futurebird I recently stayed in a decent hotel. The people working at reception (open about 12 hours a day) had to go to a cafe across the street every. single. day. Seriously the working conditions have eroded badly these past years and politicians still frame everyone of being work shy.

@futurebird This is a huge leap forward for public health in NYC. A coup for human rights for the poor. And also pretty good for me, personally. The cycle of “I need to pee so I will buy a caffeinated or alcoholic beverage” is such a pain.

Which meant that you needed to go to the loo again quite soon after... at another cafe.)

@jacobyaudio Well lets see if this is a big enough program. Doing things in NYC means go big or go home. For this to have an impact it will need to have a secure funding source and it should take about a year or two to spin up. I will be watching.

@futurebird One of the hardest things for my mom when she has tried to visit me in New York has been toilet access. If you are not used to just holding it for hours, which most of us are, the city is totally inaccessible. I showed her that most hotels will not stop you from using a lobby toilet if you look like you know what you are doing, and she was convinced the city has made me insane. And then you visit a place like Tokyo and have a luxury bidet toilet experience in a subway station...

@futurebird @jacobyaudio I was reading an interview with Mamdami where he was commenting that the funding for a lot of these programs had already been secured years ago, just never implemented. I don't know if this is one of them, but I know they've been talking about installing public toilets in NYC since I lived there in the 90s!

@nguarracino This is one of the easier parts of doing this for the city. The city has the parks, sidewalks, streets and many buildings and other places that it can use rent free. Likewise there are many existing toilets that are just... closed. Taking up space and no one can use them. For the plumbing there is a RFP for ideas and some copying of what they are doing in other cities. My major concern is long term funding.

Then it got humid. That was the one thing that really struck me when I went there for a job interview. The constant sense I was in a bathroom...and not a clean one.Surprised the rich want to live in that. I guess they're kinda up above it though.Imagine what it was like in the horse days. Some stores have restrooms for their shoppers but folks with housing difficulties and people just popping around looking 👀 must dive into any available facility ( or buy something they don’t need). @futurebird There are a couple of playgrounds here which do have bathrooms but whether or not they are open is pretty hit and miss.A friend had to take their daughter to the nearest bar to use the bathroom to make sure she didn't have an accident in early potty training days.Luckily it's the kind of neighborhood place which is very ok with that but having to leave the playground to go to a bar for that is not a sign of a healthy city.

@futurebird This is an issue that gets little consideration or political glamour, but is actually a really big deal for the livability of a city. It's up there with public transport and libraries, in my opinion. NYC has so many residents and people commuting for work, and it's such an important travel destination that it should be a priority.Too many times, politicians (particularly conservative and "economic rationalist" types) want to cut costs, or invoke the ick-factor against a group they hate (I've lived in places where closing public toilets was cited in the war against drugs or to keep kids safe from LGBTQIA+ people), or do outrageous hostile social-engineering against homeless people, and so they proudly choose to under-fund or close public toilets. It's a short-sighted move because it degrades public amenity and sanitation, and has flow-on effects for restaurants, bars, and other local businesses. On the other hand, good accessibility and around-the-clock availability of public toilets makes life safer, easier to plan for, and more comfortable for minorities, women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. And, yes, homeless people, because they're a fact of life that cannot be solved by hoping they'll simply disappear if you're cruel enough to them. I'm seeing this announcement by Zohran Mamdani as a sign that he treats people and their basic needs with respect.

@carrideen @futurebird right. the other tricks i know are pretty clustered around midtown: museum memberships, making to the mall at columbus circle, NYPL branches. Used to be Crate & Barrel, which had a set of maybe 4 stalls in 2 bathrooms. but then it moved downtown, and now there's one stall that's harder to access.
