Honestly, we really need a separation between "Lost media" and "Cancelled media" as people keep lumping them into the same category when they really are not.I mean think about it like this:Lost would imply that something was attainable and accessible at some point in order for it to literally be considered "lost" like "I lost my tape recorder" or "I lost a toy".Cancelled media is anything but that. Its a product that was planned and produced but never accessible to the public. You can never lose something you were never supposed to have in the first place. Like Spider-Man 4 the game is not fucking lost media. Its a cancelled video game that has never and will never reach the public. Thus, it wasn't lost just cancelled. Also just because you don't access to the source code, doesn't make it "lost". You just don't have that content!Like how in the fuck is MKX and P.T. considered "lost media". They're still accessible and you can still play them. Especially MKX!

@ashiisbest@miruku.cafe a lot of this stuff is fucked up due to declining tech literacy. I watched my little brother basically only grow up with my passed down PS4 as his only disc console (with even that mainly being used for digital services like PsPlus) and thus the main things he actually knows how to use are the Steam Deck I got him for Christmas and his Nintendo Switch OLED.With stuff like that and people not knowing about how easy it is to rip discs for their ROMs and whatnot, it is unfortunately easy to see how that begets an environment where any form of "rare" content is seen as "lost media" a la streaming content thats only availible via piracy being seen as "lost media"

@carlosruzu This further. Its not just ripping discs from ROMs but also actual piracy. Surprisingly alot of Gen Z/Alpha are absolutely terrified about the idea of pirating as if they're going to jail.I blame the lack of education towards these things and YouTubers who spend a gajillion dollars just to buy some second hand copy when he could just "download the rom" lmao.

@ashiisbest fear instilled from boomer parents probably also . I've unfortunately been there as I accidentally pirated skyrim via bittorrent without a VPN back in like 2021(?) and got a letter from our isp telling us to fuck off. since then, have been banned from pirating games specifically in their householdluckily this only applies to torrents isps don't give a fuck about soulseek, Anna's archive or emualtion though, hahahahahhahahahahahhahahahaha.

@ashiisbest idk this generation I noticed is REALLY tryhard regarding either being company glazers or likely, just parading the idea of being punk while not actually wanting to be fringe yet principled in their beliefs. Even as someone with fringe takes ("copyright bad actually", aggressively pro consumer takes, etc.), you only find people who are pro piracy usually as a result of signaling to an in group rather than either honestly liking getting free stuff or thinking for themselves on the topic
