You could use Bridgy Fed to convince folks on ATProto why ActivityPub is better and point them to Bounce so they can migrate without losing their network.Disengaging is counter-productive to success. You don't win hearts by ignoring them.

@quillmatiq same with defederating jerk fedi servers. unless a server refuses to police their users who harass users on other servers, defederating does no good. without algos and when there's good moderation, you're not going to see what you don't choose to here. like the open web. it doesn't have the Nazi bar problem despite it having Nazi websites.

@wjmaggos I would hate to be on a server with a heavy-handed admin, I'd just be afraid of losing access to everything because of one bad day

@quillmatiq imo we need a norm here that says be as strict as you want with what's allowed on your server but only defederate when a server refuses to police their users for abusing users on other servers. maybe also for their users spamming hashtags.

@quillmatiq@mastodon.social @wjmaggos@liberal.city Reminds me of when the admin of Mastodon.online I think shutdown the service after having a bad day. I run my own instance because I don't want to deal with that risk and losing my post history or similar. Plus the whole de-centralized nature of the federated universe doesn't really exist if only a handful of people are able to run an instance.

@elaine @quillmatiqthe most hopeful model is at least one public instance per town imo.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city @quillmatiq@mastodon.social That sounds reasonable! I built a lightweight AP server that mostly works Yet it's far from perfect, iit s buggy but in early dev stages, and at a minimum the setup still requires downloading a GitHub Repo, running a PowerShell script from someone you don't know or trust, buying a domain name, giving your payment details to a cloud provider, and the risks that centralized cloud providers pose to online privacy.
