#Mastodon desperately needs end-to-end encryption on Direct Messages. Period.

@ParadeGrotesque @lauren There’s an ActivityPub E2EE Messaging Task Force at the W3C.https://socialwebfoundation.org/2025/12/19/implementing-encrypted-messaging-over-activitypub/https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-e2eeFolks are working on it, it’s being organized it seems.

@occult Yes, but @lauren was asking about Mastodon, not ActivityPub, and the people at mastodon.social are uninterested in E2E encryption, since the only thing that matters for them right now is growing their little kingdom to sell out at one point.

@ParadeGrotesque how exactly can one sell out Mastodon? It's open source software, with thousands of servers, openly developed and ActivityPub organizing E2EE support is a very good first step. Why the cynicism?

@origamiunicorn Because it seems people at Mastodon had high-level talks with Facebook just before threads launched. Because they have never clearly explained what those discussions were about. Because they specifically signed an NDA with Facebook in order not to be able to communicate about these talks.Because they outsource their moderation to the rest of the Fediverse, and open their instance to every spammer and con man there is. They make sure their instance is always promoted first.

@origamiunicorn I could go on and on...Mastodon (the non profit) is not acting in good faith. Mastodon (the instance) is behaving like a hostile actor to the rest of the Fediverse. Mastodon (the software) is slow bloated & ugly. Mastodon (the phone app) is buggy and only serves the interest of the non profit. In short, Mastodon has outlived its usefulness and is quickly becoming the equivalent of Mozilla.Except that Firefox is still useful, while alternatives exist for Mastodon.
