@klaatu I've tried a bunch and in my personal experience they all suck ass. They're essentially the beyond meat of kitchen equipment. Just saying

@ThatCrazyDude think it was Darren O'Neil 1st talked about using 1, seems lots here have gone air fryer over having a microwave even. I dunno, I picked up an Instapot one off woot for cheap. Still haven't unboxed it. Seems to pass these tests well but did hear you need to wash it w/vinegar first or it smells plastic/rubber like. May be some protective shipping coating? in production needs to be wiped away. I'll get to it eventually. Don't think it suits Italian cooking though.Wld explain dislike

@klaatu @ThatCrazyDude I only use my Instant Pot for things like chili, curry, chicken stock, etc I wouldn't consider it for anything Italian.I will promote a good meat slicer though. Mine is a Berkel (but not a cool vintage one). Just got a big order of guanciale, coppa, pancetta, duck prosciutto, and a couple different pork and wild boar salumi. And still have some Norcia guanciale I brought back from Spoleto a couple months ago. Should probably have some carbonara tonight.

@zio @klaatu yeah, those things are basically just overpriced electric toaster ovens with fans.

@ThatCrazyDude @zio yeah a convection toaster oven in a different format. I think Zio got confused, I bought an instapot brand dedicated air fryer. You can also get an air fryer top to fit on an instapot or Ninja Etc electric pressure cooker. But he sounds like he was describing the limited uses for the pressure cooker by that name. Those are okay in Italian meals, as they just speed up cooking time. Air frying doesn't really work with a lot of pasta meals unless you're getting really creative.

@klaatu @ThatCrazyDude Yes, I’m kinda tarded and was referring to the pressure cooker. I don’t get air fryers. Where does the oil go?

@zio @ThatCrazyDude it's kind of like cooking with a dehydrator. The moisture evaporates off or it's trapped with the oil inside the food. Imagine cooking a drumstick with a hair dryer. Kind of like that. The healthy trend is pitched that you don't add any bad oil/grease to cook it in, just use hot air.Like a microwave, it's convenient for kids to use. Drop frozen food in tray, set time, press button, eat heated food. Nobody learns to cook anymore.

@klaatu @zio @ThatCrazyDude If you’re frying raw chicken you do have to mix oil into the batter, otherwise it just bakes it.

@magicalthinking @zio @ThatCrazyDude and the little oil you mixed in stays mostly inside the battered chicken right? You're effectively making fried chicken w/o having to care for a deep fryer full of hot oil. At most some wash & wipe surface cleaning. Even air baked chicken sounds pretty tasty right now. 👨🍳zio you can buy an air fryer lid to add to your instant pot pressure cooker but I think it's still cheaper to buy a standalone fryer instead, esp if it's on sale.

@klaatu @zio @ThatCrazyDude you mostly use an airfryer for reheating already fried things.
